Hello everyone! Got logged out of my regular login without my knowledge or consent - and couldn't get back in until I made a new account. All sorted now.

Am currently in Munich - have had a busy few days. Basically my daughter in law is about 38 weeks pregnant with her second, and developed major problems on Saturday (in Aust). Had to drop everything and leap onto the next flight to get there an wrangle her first one (aged 3). Son was completely distraught what with everything which should not surprise. DIL is still in intensive care, and son is spending as much time there as possible. Lil one is a handful - smart enough to know that there's something seriously wrong with Mum but unable to really regulate her own behaviour and emotions. DIL's mother will be joining us here at the end of this week so we can hand off kid wrangling to each other as required. Somewhere along the way my login here got cut off, and have only now been able to get a new one.

Haven't seen much of the city yet - son & DIL's flat is over the road and down an alley from some huuuuge gardens - I think it's called Nymphenbourg and there's some kind of historic palace there so kid & I have been checking them out. I have discovered that one year of high school german 50+ years ago is not sufficient for food shopping effectively in this town. Have fallen back on on-line ordering & delivery. The pictures really really help. Next time I brave the shops I will take my life into my hands and try google translate or similar. Any recommendations for a suitable app?

EDIT: Thanks huugely everyone for all your well wishes and advice on translations etc. We'll know more about DIL's condition in the next couple of days. Still touch & go rn.

Very much hope DIL and baby will be ok. You are an angel for helping. Sounds like a very stressful time for the family.

[–] tone212_@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago

Oh wow that sounds full on! I hope your DIL pulls through without any issues.

Google Translate app is the way to go - just point your camera at whatever needs translating and watch the magic. The translations are not always super coherent but enough to understand what's going on.

How’s she coping with the cone?

E: just read further down - hope you found something that worked

We are at the sulking stage

[–] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Tell her things could be worse, she could be wearing that sunflower instead. And as we all know being told "it could be worse" when we are pissed off and grumpy always instantly lightens our spirits and makes everything ok.

/s just in case it's not obvious

Oh believe me I’d love to be making fun of the cone but I’ll wait till she’s feeling better lol

We've all felt this way after a bender, especially when we've thrown hands while intoxicated.

Teen comes up behind me in gym. I turn around. He says nothing, just gestures with his hands. I knew what he was asking but I said β€œsorry, are there any words?”. I’m not hurrying up if you can’t be bothered to ask nicely how long I have left on a machine.

Being in this place gives me an interesting insight into Gen Z manners. They said millennials were entitled….

This is where I usually rip out the old β€œthe fuck do you want?”

Great angst at team meeting, as "do more with less" edges closer and closer to "do everything with nothing"

The patient decided to rip her cone off at 3am. After several attempts at getting the collar back on I sedated her.

Rang the vet and they said keep her sedated the next few days.

Jesus Christ lol

She has a reputation at the vet clinic now hahaha

Edit: back we go to the vet for a better collar. I turned my back for 2 mins and caught her licking the stitches. And this is sedated AND on painkillers.

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh lol

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I too will be sedated for the next few days. Get well soon Gibbo Cat.

[–] Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

All the best! I hope it heals ok. I’ve shoulder problems the last couple of years and it fucking sucks ❀️

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Bills paid, payslip checked, grocery delivery ordered. I'm running out of excuses to avoid doing my assignment.

A house a few streets away got aggravatedly burgled the other night. The dad was sleeping on the couch, and had his car keys right near. He didn't wake up, and luckily he didn't, because the offenders had machetes. Does the government think every house has a machete amnesty box or something? Maybe it will make it slightly harder to get machetes, but I highly doubt the people who already have them and use them for malicious intent would give them up anyway.

Anyway, I get kids are kids and there is the potential for retribution. But I think there definitely needs to be harsher penalties for them. I really hope there is some reform soon. In schools, sometimes kids face little consequences for their actions, and it seems that way in society too.

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

an older teenager with a machete is just as dangerous as an adult with a machete.

This isn't kids being kids. This is young people with anti-social tendencies. 99% of kids don't commit crimes like this.

In a confrontation they don't get special treatment just because they are young. They get treated just like anyone else with a deadly weapon. Sorry, I would shoot if I had a gun.

And this is not burglary, it's aggravated burglary and they get long prison sentences for that shit.

The people who broke into the house a bit away were not found. But it is absolutely horrifying to think what they could've done to the occupiers of the house.

[–] SituationCake@aussie.zone 4 points 5 days ago

It’s unsettling to know it happened so close to your house. Agree that machete ban is useless. It’s just for show, because the government wants to seem like they are doing something. If you have a teen that doesn’t care about getting caught for car jacking, aggravated burglary, stabbing, murdering, gang violence, then why would they care about something so minor as owning a machete. It’s nothing by comparison.

There needs to be both effective deterrent and effective rehab, ie jail and education and support programs. But that costs money, better that innocent people get attacked and if they are lucky escape with lifetime ptsd, if not just die via machete murder. The world is depressing.

I'm giving a presentation at co-working tomorrow for businesses in the building. I was expecting little to no interest, the room fits about 10 to 12 people and 9 people have already sent a RSVP. Working on my slides at the moment. I'm excited but also quite nervous, been a while since I've done presenting like this! I hate presenting but need to push myself out of my comfort zone. If it goes well I'll be rolling this out at other locations, so hopefully I'm not a nervous wreck tomorrow.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 5 points 5 days ago

wooo worked out I've done something like 16 hours fucking overtime this month already - most of it dealing with germans - so I decided unless a tyre fire started I was gonna be light on the workload.

Consequently I've run 50m of poly piping linking tank systems.

I had tuna steak for dinner. Miss Meow is complaining she didn't get a serve.

Just found a dead lorikeet in one of the rooms here :( The alarm went off when I was down the beach 2 weeks ago so it was probably that. Poor thing. Really sad to think it probably had a partner who's out there wondering where it is.

My next gas bill is going to be horrific. It's due for an actual meter read, they have been doing estimates for the last couple of months and the estimates are about half what I am actually using. I could update the reading myself, but I'd rather keep the money in my account earning interest. It is a bit annoying getting the bill every 28 days instead of when the meter is read and I'm guessing it catches a lot of people out who don't realise it is estimated.

First cuppa for the day

I watched some videos on trams in Slovakia with the boys and they look very similar to our E Class trams. The design of trams is probably centring on one specific shape that works.

But what also struck me is how quiet the videos are. These trams are completely separated from cars and there's almost no sound in the videos. The trams don't even ding when they take off.

It's great timing as I recently watched the Not Just Bikes video on why trams are great and street cars suck, and I feel like Melbourne Trams are right in the middle.
