But I thought that "cancel culture" was anathema to the GOP and MAGA?

Is this something I'm too Canadian to understand?

So they've now gotten rid of Colbert and Kimmel, 2 of the most brutally honest guys going after trump. Interesting.

Sooo... I'm guessing the complaints are coming from people who didn't watch it? Because I can't put my finger on anything that was horrible or false or anything.

[–] mitch@piefed.mitch.science 57 points 2 days ago

I'm confident they were just looking for a reason after Colbert. Seth Meyers better use his last few weeks before he gets pinched to come up with a contingency plan, cus this is a fucking crackdown.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My guess is that the right wing propaganda machine to hide the epstein connections, doesn't want it shown that trump takes kirk lightly and doesn't give a shit about his death. It's hard to keep it going if dear leader doesn't even care.

July 2025 Paramount/CBS agreed to pay $16 million to trump over a 60 Minutes lawsuit, then announced The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is being cancelled.

July 2025 PBS and NPR were federally defunded in a Congressional tribute to trump.

December 2024 Disney/ABC agreed to pay $15 million to trump over a defamation lawsuit, then in September 2025 cancelled Jimmy Kimmel Live.

September 2025 New York Times, Penguin Books, several authors are now being sued by trump for $15 billion because, still, that 60 Minutes segment.

Just a reminder: No Kings

I've been saying that the billionaires and oligarchs — who own the majority of the S&P500 and political class — WANT fascism for the last 2 decades. They are behind it's political resurgence, globally; most have already publicly stated things that prove they are authoritarian sociopaths (Musk, Thiel, the Koch's, Ellison, Zuck, etc).

This explains why Trump has never seen the invite or a prison cell, despite 100 clear as day felonies, why the Dem establishment has never done more than performative resistance, etc.

This is why they got rid of him. WTF there was nothing bad I guess making daddy Trump look bad is against the law.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 179 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Fucking bitch ass move by a bitch ass corporation capitulating to a bitch ass administration.

[–] hemmes@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

The decision by Nexstar comes as the broadcast station is seeking FCC approval for its $6.2 billion mega deal to acquire Tegna, a deal that would make Nexstar by far the largest owner of local TV stations in the country.

The FCC would have to raise the 40 percent ownership cap in order to let the deal advance.

Quote from The Hollywood Reporter. Just like CBS with Colbert.

Canceled my D+ and Hulu subscriptions and wrote in other:

“Capitulating to Trump’s version of fascist America and knee jerk reaction to Kimmel made me rethink why I should give you my money. I don’t even like or watch Kimmel, but you are allowing free speech to be violated. I don’t support free speech abolitionists.“

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We need to start poisoning Disney brands.

Never thought I’d see the day the Mouse wore a swastika.

Are you kidding? Walt Disney was a virulent anti-semite.

[–] ghostface@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Not only do I agree, but I will comment to show visible support. This isn't about Charlie it's free speech.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I cancelled mine too. Clicked other but don't remember seeing a place to comment. Missed opportunity. Well done you, though.

He barely even remarked on it. He said nothing about Kirk himself.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

Honestly he said more about how little Trump gave a shit about him and how much more Trump cared about his stupid ballroom

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 104 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Washington Post fired its black opinion editor because she quoted Charlie Kirk for saying:

“Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person’s slot.”

Let’s stop taking the Washington Post seriously

Those are paraphrases of Kirk's words. It might be more accurate to say those are his positions.

Why were universities letting this shit bag talk to their students?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago

Especially since he never attended any college or had any education after high school.

I've seen this before. It would really be a lot nicer if these quotes all had sources. Just showing someone a list of quotes with no context doesn't really scream "credible" to this target audience.

Capitulating to fascists and bullies NEVER ends well...

This is why the fediverse matters. Kimmel or Colbert, right now they can turn to platforms like YT and will still be able to get the voice out.

But guess what. The same corporatism that control ABC control google. You live on their platforms your message is dependent on their approval.

The future is free; the future is federated.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 53 points 2 days ago (4 children)

As an immediate illustration to your point apparently Reddit politics has apparently been removing this story left and right.

Even this framing is dishonest - he didn't make comments about Charlie Kirk, he was mocking MAGA for rushing to weaponize his death. ABC shut down his show for a valid criticism of MAGA.

[–] ohlaph@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

Yeah, it's not looking good for them. Everyone is siding with trump in fear of being targeted.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 77 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Fascism, folks. Time to resist

That's just fucking outrageous. Taking about lunatics.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 49 points 2 days ago

They're just getting started. Colbert was fired as a demand to allow the sale of CBS' to Larry Ellison, 2nd richest man, and a vicious MAGA. With Colbert out, the decks were cleared for the sale.

CBS used to have the reputation of being the gold standard of broadcast news. Now it's just going to be one more mouthpiece in the Conservative Propaganda Machine.
