Just a reminder that the US passed a law in 2011 that said any “terrorist” detained by the US military is not entitled to the normal US due process rights of a speedy trial.

In short: the military can imprison “terrorists” indefinitely without trial.

The specific law that allows this: NDAA 2012 which includes a provision in section 1021 which allows the military to detain “any person who has committed a belligerent act or has supported such hostilities in aid of [forces engaged in hostilities against the United States].”

Thanks, Obama.

So ...... it's illegal to be against fascism?

For the US, that sounds about right.

[–] misk@piefed.social 29 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Somewhat scary given that US has a history of extrajudicial killing of foreign people labeled as terrorists.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 37 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Also scary considering Antifa isn’t actually an organization. So they can just say anyone is Antifa.

[–] misk@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago

Anyone can say they’re antifa too. I’m head of antifa for the whole immediate area (my condo).

I should prepare for the incoming death squads, I guess.

You're not supposed to say the quiet parts out loud 📢

Does antifa even formally exist? I thought it was an umbrella term like Anonymous back in the day. No formal membership, just an idea that you either supported or not.

That sounds an awful lot like "antifa talk," to me...

Was thinking about this all night after hearing the statement before bed. It reminds me of a right wing ex-family friend that blamed antifa and Soros for everything. Right wingers genuinely think there is a Soros backed terrorist organization called Antifa similar to the Proud Boys, etc (which actually exist) that cause everything they hate.

At the time he was explaining this, it was in regards to how all the college kids protesting Gaza "had the same tents" (aka the cheapest tents on Amazon lol) and that Antifa was backing them. Basically, it's the propaganda boogyman they've used for a few years now.

But here's what I'm trying to figure out ... What happens when you chase after the boogyman? Sure the people in charge are just using it as an excuse to be anyone they don't like, but if you're a true believer like the followers, what will constitute evidence of being Antifa? Owning a fucking tent?

Thought they had dropped the Soros thing, haven't heard that name called out in a long time.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Actually his name got dropped kinda recently, though I forget the context. Like last week on NPR.

"In a follow-up statement, President Trump declared the leaders of antifa to be Bernie Sanders, AOC, Zohran Mamdani, the word 'Epstein,' and the eclipse he stared into."

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Please tell me that's a joke?

I mean, my comment is, but that's how this ride has been playing out.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

He had some children he wanted to rape so he had to book it before he could explain anything

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

YOU get a terrorist designation, YOU get a terrorist designation, terrorist designations for EVERYBODY

Facism is mask off liberal democracy

Obama and Bushes “anti terrorism” laws paved the way for how bad this is gonna be.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That wasn't "Liberal Democracy". America has been a conservative/neoliberal corporate dictatorship for a long time.
