Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.

Do you like canning? Do you want to learn canning? Or food preservation? Come make this community slightly more active! Although it's soon to be fall or autumn or things and maybe is some places and soon all the canning!

I need to buy apples and can more apple butter.

I kept trying to make the url and it kept being weird, hopefully this version works!

I'm going to be pickling some daikon and carrot (and possibly some sweet red pepper) soonish. I should probably document the process and put it into that community.

It'll be interesting to see how people react to water-seal jars.

I've been interested to try canning but I'm afraid of contamination. How easy is it to screw up?

Hmmm. Probably statistically more likely than commercial canning, but. If you follow instructions from something like Ball/Kerr canning website or the National Center for Home Food Preservation (as long as that lasts before the US takes it down) it's safe! I've never had cans go bad during the 18th month window they say....or even after that, but the food can taste less nice as time goes on.

Ah that's good to know! I might try it next year with my excess garden yield.

Oooh canning~ 😍 All I've done this year is elderberry syrup lol.

Maybe this version of the link will stay in-app? !canning@midwest.social

Yeah, when I tried doing that link I couldn't post it in the app I use, which was weird!

Fedi jank i guess? Very cool canning community though, it's really nice to see more of this kind of content here

I like canning and i am subscribed there, I just haven't been able to do it for a while. My major problem is that I dont Garden and it seems stupid to buy a bunch of produce to can it. Some things are still worthwhile. I am planning on canning some cranberry sauce for thanksgiving.

I made jam from foraging wild blackberries. They're an invasive species that grow pretty much in any green space they can find. I was able to gather several pounds of fruit in an afternoon.

I can't get candied jalapenos here for...a not horrible price, so buying jalapenos just to can those has been good for me! Same with apple butter, I don't generally see it on the shelf. I try and can things that I just can't find here! But yeah, some things are not worth it.

What's apple butter like? I've never had it

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Imagine you took applesauce and cooked it down a lot until it's a spread. Then you used that like butter (there's no dairy in apple butter) so on toast or in oatmeal and the like. It's not quite the same ratios of ingredients but close enough.

It's tasty! I'll make a batch in the slow cooker over the course of a day and can it that night.

Ooh crock pot recipe please! 😊

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

6.5lbs of apples 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 1/4th teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla

I have a large oval crockpot! It'll cook down a lot though.
