I'm asking new joiners because I know it can be confusing at first to see issues with content discoverability, instances unavailability, people migrating accounts, etc.

Started using Lemmy a lot more with sync than without. No longer using Lemmy web (I've never used Reddit web anyway). Still running into occasional bugs, such as thread comments rendering out of order. But definitely expected as this is still in beta.

Did have to change servers as lemmy.world was getting bogged down.

For what it's worth, this seems to be a bug with lemmy, not sync. Same bug posted on another app community and that was the consensus.

Tbh I'm not super down with lemmy yet. It feel like too much like an r/all experience with very little users. Most of my feed at reddit was very niche communities that either connected me to people like myself or gave me a window in the lives of people totally unlike myself. Here I see some news, redditbashing or meta comments about lemmy and a lot of technology/privacy content that I'm just not interested in. Even if I find niche communities, they have no posts. Maybe this will get better over time, but I'm not sure if I'll stick around for that long.

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 year ago

Usually niche communities are on their own corner of the Fediverse and rarely make it to All

The startrek comes to mind as a good example, and all the ttrpg communities too.

Are there some examples of niche communities you usually follow?

[-] else@lemdro.id 5 points 1 year ago

Nah he's right. I follow fighting games which are practically dead on lemmy, manga which is growing and has posts and votes now but still never has comments, etc. At least the tech stuff is an interest for me, unlike him.

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

That's true, but people will get there. It will be a long process for people to arrive in enough numbers so that we have the same level of content as Reddit, but it's going to happen eventually, seen how fast Reddit is ruining itself.

For anime, I guess you follow !anime@lemmy.ml ? It is much more active than the lemmy.world one.

Fighting games will still be on Reddit indeed.

!moviesandtv@lemmy.film is a good example of thematic community which is quite active

It is making me miss the communities I used to follow on Reddit that don't (yet?) Exist here. But it is a comfortable way to get my distraction scrolling in.

It's been pretty good. I have noticed the default sort order ('Active') results in the feed getting stale pretty quickly. Changing the default to 'New' has been a better experience so far, at least at the current level of activity.

I have had a few issues subscribing to communities on remote instances (i.e. not showing up in search, or showing up but with an empty feed when content definitely exists when I check the web UI) - this does not appear to be an SFW/NSFW issue, and some communities from the same remote instances appear correctly.

Hard to tell if this is an instance/protocol issue, or an app issue.

[-] censor@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago

Not sure if Sync allows it, but default sorting to top/6 hours has given me the most enjoyable experience of cycling content so far

[-] stu@lemmy.pit.ninja 14 points 1 year ago

It's not an app issue, you'll notice the same behavior in any Lemmy client. Once you're subscribed successfully, new content should be coming in normally unless, again, there is an instance/federation issue.

[-] Emperor@feddit.uk 8 points 1 year ago

That happens if no-one on your instance has subscribed to that community - search for the address with ! at the start and refresh the page if 8tbis blank or shows and error, this should force it through for you.

This is one of the more confusing and frustrating aspects to Lemmy and they are working to improve it

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

There is this tool that can be used to address that issue, you have to ask your admin to run it:

I'm just waiting for post functionality, but this is the Sync that I know and love.

[-] cur1s82@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I used sync before I ever had a Reddit account, I was a digg person and after the mass migration I just kind of 'meh' and didn't have a doom scroller

But then, magic, more and more friends discussed Reddit (never giving away their usernames of course) and I asked and someone just said "oh don't bother with the web, just download sync" and I fell in love, the UI just... It is the definition of a good UI, I just "knew" how to use it

Then when I found out if I made a Reddit account I could sub and find more content I liked, was the first time I ever loaded the Reddit page, only yo make an account and then login to sync.

When the most recent bad Reddit occurred and our dear dev was pondering moving I just waited and now, I have a lemmy account

Might not be for everyone, but it's the only app for Reddit (I did actually try others during a brief time when I didn't have the ability to filter videos out) but nothing ever clicked

Side notes, I am more of a lurker which may or may not be relevant

[-] HonoraryMancunian@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

It's ok, except for when it's down. I assume it's something to do with .world

[-] AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Lemmy.world suffers from DDOS attacks for the last couple of days, hence the reason for downtimes.

[-] itadakimasu@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago
[-] AndreyAsimow@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

And last month as well. Just yesterday or before .world was down for sometimes.

[-] ramble81@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Yeah Sync hasn't gone done yet, it's been the instance which lately is lemmy.world being the target of DDoS attacks. When that happens I switch to an alternate account and things are running fine again, so it's not Sync related.

Try out a smaller instance, they'll still get .world content but will be less... Cumbersome

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 year ago

Good to hear! Regarding the availability, you might want to change to another instance temporarily. You can use https://github.com/CMahaff/lasim to move your subscriptions and blocked instances.

In terms of suggestions, the choice depends on where you are located (for latency issues). Most of the regional instances (lemmy.ca, feddit.de, feddit.uk, midwest.social etc.) are usually good choices.

For generalist instances, Lemm.ee, reddthat.com and sh.itjusts.works are usually solid choices

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 5 points 1 year ago

Lemmy.sdf.org is another general instance I'd recommend. It's run by the Public Access Unix non-profit org.

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

Yes, very nice indeed

[-] electriccars@startrek.website 3 points 1 year ago

Sign up for another instance that federates with .world.

I had the same issue you did so I signed up on another instance I liked and now I can browse even when .world is down.

[-] kratoz29@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

Sync for Lemmy is awesome, it is not bugless but it is the one I like more.

My current ROM doesn't manage the RAM well, so my apps reload faster than I would like if I exit them.

This is not an issue with Sync, I don't know what dark magic it does to avoid it tbh.

[-] russjr08@outpost.zeuslink.net 6 points 1 year ago

One thing that I've really enjoyed about Sync is how good it is at restoring its own state. I don't think I can ever remember a time where I went back to open Sync, and it wasn't where I expected it to be.

I swear it also just seems to know when its a good time to actually reset its state, and take me back to the home screen. Logically I know that Sync doesn't have machine learning capabilities built-in to "guestimate" this and is probably just a state-cache invalidation timer (or something along those lines)... but it certainly does feel like some dark magic!

[-] kratoz29@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah that's what I mean, legit when I'm using Connect for Lemmy I just swipe to another app to respond a message and go back to Connect and all is gone lol, and this shit is worse because I have connect to hide read posts so yeah, it is a funny quest to find the post I was before.

This isn't specifically of connect though, I'd say it happens to all the Lemmy apps but Sync and maybe Voyager.

[-] Fwow13@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

I've been loving it, feels good to be using it again. Lemmy isn't as active as I would love it to be (especially in the topics I'm interested in), but being able to scroll around using Sync has really motivated me to be active here. I hope that happens with more people.

I really wish I could submit posts using the app, and there are a couple of the features that feel like should be basic functions that require a subscription to use. Happy to support the developer, but I don't like subscription models and not sure if there's enough value here for me (yet) to justify a one-time $99 payment.

I'd also love it if the "no more posts loaded. Retry?" toast message would time out and fade away. It ends up blocking some of the info for the last post it loaded at the bottom of the screen, and it just doesn't leave!

Sync still doesn't work for me. It crashes as soon as it opens. I'm enjoying Liftoff right now. I think I'll stick with it even if Sync starts working.

[-] ljdawson@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Like at all? Not seeing this in the crash logs. Any chance of reinstalling?

[-] Oyster_Lust@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I reinstalled and it's working now. I'm replying using Sync. Thanks.

[-] Reborn2966@feddit.it 4 points 1 year ago

it did too for me, but it fixed with an update.

try wiping data and cache.

[-] Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

I find myself just keeping with the website, even on mobile. I like the ability to see comments of my subscriptions

I was using sync for reddit before. It's very similar but way less fresh content. It will get better though. I'm still using default subs.

[-] d3Xt3r@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

You mean users who joined Lemmy for the first time with Sync?

I have used it for a short while, but one thing I can not appreciate is having all the display settings (cudo's for that) but all Inwant is everything look the same over all accounts.

And a "sync subscriptions and block lists" option would rock!

[-] ChickenMcPluckU@discuss.online 4 points 1 year ago

Having an option to apply changes to all accounts would be nice.

As a workaround, I make a backup of the account I change and restore it to all the others.

Honestly pretty great, still in the process of blocking some of the instances I'm not interested in but I like it a lot for what I do (browse the main page by top/active to get a bit off everything)
