The headline made me think this was something shady, but it's actually pretty cool. A teeny-tiny little incorporated community out in the wilderness with a decades-long tradition of voting at midnight, so they can be the first in the nation to announce their results.

Agreed. It looks like they're having fun with it, so that makes me happy, even if I don't agree with who they voted for.

even if I don't agree with who they voted for

I mean, it's a Republican primary, were there any better options? There was certainly at least one worse one

Four registered Republican voters and two independents participated in the vote

My mistake. I thought this part meant they had an open primary. It looks like they just pick what ballot they want.

In my state, Independents don't get to vote at all in a primary. That's the only reason I have a party affiliation.

NH even lets you register to vote at the polling place. (Your ballot is provisional until you prove residency)

That seems like a positive thing.

What a mishmash of systems we have to vote in this country!

This place was the inspiration for a West Wing episode called "Hartsfield Landing."

The weird thing about that episode is that they describe how the town does their primary tradition at midnight, except it's between Bartlet and Ritchie who have both already secured their party's nomination. And in the episode, they make a big deal about how they have correctly predicted the winner of every presidential election. Even with an open primary, that doesn't make a lot of sense.

You're not the only one who's picked up on this:

If you watch the show (and I've watched it a lot) you can tell that Aaron Sorkin wasn't writing to a detailed plan. I think a lot of his ongoing storylines grew organically (and were often turned in very late, which ultimately led to him being sacked from the show), which meant he sometimes repeated, or retconned, beats, or made other mistakes.

Hartsfield's Landing was probably named after Hart's Location, another New Hampshire town that has often votes at midnight. I recall reading a story that, because of the weather, of the three towns that usually do vote at midnight only Dixville did so this year.

edit: Hrrm. Turns out that's what the linked CNN story actually says. Serves me right for not RTFA.

Stop the count. All valid results are in

I demand a recount! An audit! Another audit after the first one doesn't find anything! A lawsuit challenging the recount! A lawsuit challenging the first lawsuit because it wasn't challenging enough! Fake news, people, this election was stolen! Those six people were clearly dead, obvious voter fraud, anyone can see it!
