The population on lemmy is not par with reddit. It takes time but we will get there if reddit keeps on fucking up like it does now.
It's a good time to remember all the things we consider the norm from there were nowhere to be seen during the Digg migration. Give it time for the fediverse to find its footing and its own way!
Yeah but we're not talking about niche interests subs, we're talking about discussions of movies and stuff. They're really basic, really standard, and really popular things for an internet forum to have. They were a norm long before Digg and Reddit, and they were routinely some of the most trafficked and active posts on Reddit.
You would think that the first communities and the first norms to really take root and grow here would be the most basic. It's kind of weird how after 7 months there just hasn't been any real establishment of them.
There was a community like this on another instance with a focus on film/tv called Lemmy.film that had more traction, but unfortunately it was among those early instances that spun up only to abruptly fall away at some point.
If I'm not mistaken I think this community may have been created in response to its loss, but it hasn't managed to get as much activity for whatever reason. Prior to the Lemmy.film instance going away, its version of this community had around five thousand subscribers.
I think what also may not help is that this community is on Lemm.ee which has stricter limits on media upload sizes, which may get in the way of sharing memes/clips from shows/movies they're enjoying, if not from other instances then certainly from those on Lemm.ee itself.

That is correct, but the first community was created was created during the peak of Lemmy users post Reddit exodus, we are now much less on Lemmy as a whole. !moviesandtv@lemm.ee is still the most active movie community in the whole of Lemmy.
The media restriction might play a role, but I don't remember that many videos upload from the previous version. What was there though, is the discussion threads that we are discussing here. I opened a discussion on them this morning but got that thread removed (see below). That's a bit concerning to be honest.

Interesting to note: if you review the mod log, that's not the first time either. For some reason, a prior meta post three months ago was also removed, as well as an attempt at a discussion thread. Although oddly in both cases they were restored, but looking at them I don't see any explanations provided, and incidentally they were both from you, I think.
Edit: supposing a discussion doesn't help here, it may be wise to try to create another community for the same purpose but with clearer rules and moderation. 🤷♀️ Seems to be the natural way of things with the internet.
I'll give it a last try today, let's see how it goes
yeah, it feels like people here literally only watch star trek. recently i was in a star trek thread where someone asked for any sci-fi that wasn't brain dead, other than star trek. out of like 10 replied i was the only one to actually give recommendations.
It's because lemmy is just 50% of the worst possible political takes, star trek and boomer memes.
The only thing that concerns me is that lemmy downvotes/bans anyone that doesn't match their ideology. People suck, their ideologies suck but we have to get past through that too.
Come to kbin, we don't federate downvotes so if the lemmys downvote you, you can't even see it.
Or try Beehaw, they don't have downvotes at all.
That's worse on Reddit.
reddit hivemind started after it got a sustainable amount of users, that can't be said for lemmy right now.
TV shows don’t end anymore - they just don’t get renewed.
Another reason why the episodic format is superior to serialization. At least you're not left hangin' when it's cancelled mid-season.
I reckon the best shows are the ones that are largely episodic with a serialised overarching story. Where you can pick up pretty much any episode and be cool with it, but where watching it all in order provides the best experience and it has a satisfying definitive conclusion.
This.
I do love me some serialized storytelling, but episodic storytelling is interesting too.
Some do end. Many of them quite some time after their storylines.
Be the change you want.
I want about tree fiddy
Well it was about that time that I realised Nomecks was about eight stories tall and was a crustacean from the protozoic era!
I ain't givin' you no tree fiddy, you goddamn loch ness monster
I hear you ... it does feel like film and TV diccussions are something where we should all just get together and agree to go to one place.
Obviously we're all free and able to visit multiple communities ... but there's a "greater than the sum of its parts" effect in having more people in one place.
It feels like the lack of polls in lemmy are sorely missing here ... it'd be nice to get a feel for what people actually want and why.
Personally, I don't like the idea of so many communities being on lemmy.world ... so I don't subscribe to the film community over there ... but if it turns out that that's where everyone is, so be it I suppose, I'd hang out there while keeping an eye out for niche film communities because they could be cool too.
Otherwise ... there's a broader statement to be had about the fediverse here ... so many people are over on mastodon and yet very few of them can interact here because mastodon does a shitty job of interacting with groups/channels/sub-reddit style structures. But platform interaction is or was the promise of the fediverse ... so I personally blame these sorts of problems, to some extent, on mastodon ... because there are plenty of people talking about films over there ... but strewn across various threads, instances and hashtags.
They have discussion threads at !movies@lemmy.world.
Edit: clarification: that thread was on !moviesandtv@lemm.ee , this community, not on LW
FYI, I posted this discussion today, it got removed by the mod.
I sent them a DM, let's see how it goes.
I would love to hear the mods rationale for removing this post.
"not movie related" is going to be my guess
Well, it's the same for this thread, isn't it?
Idk if they have same mods?
It's the same community.
Rereading the comments above, that was probably unclear
Ahhhh
I guess we all do
I’m on your side.
@TheImpressiveX seconding this, they're the largest lemmy movie community. @THEDAEMON are you subscribed there?
Doesn't help with the TV stuff I guess.
The thing I miss about reddit are the subs like r/askhistorians and other strictly moderated subs that vetted comment information and regular poster credentials.
Yea ask science mods were gods among men
Start one
I did, for a show I'm interested in. It's very hard to get any discussions or traction going. Any suggestions on how to facilitate these things?
Not the person you responded to, but I can try to offer some suggestions. At a glance I take it the community you're talking about is Invincible, but I don't see any posts where you've tried to direct people to the community.
I'd recommend posting to !newcommunities@lemmy.world, despite it not being new anymore, and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca. So far as I can tell, these seem to be two of the larger and relatively more active communities for this.
I'd also suggest subscribing to !asklemmy@lemmy.world and !asklemmy@lemmy.ml to keep an eye out for if/when people ask about shows people are enjoying or even just outright for communities for [insert show]. For the latter especially I'd also suggest subscribing to !lemmy411@lemmy.ca, which while not as active is where occasionally you'll see people explicitly looking for communities, giving you a great opportunity to point them to your community if it's relevant.
Beyond this, maybe cross-post some of the threads to relevant and/or broader communities, so say cross-post some of your Invincible threads (after a bit of time, so as to not seem spammy, some people browsing can be really picky about this) to other communities. For instance you might cross-post some of these to !casualconversation@lemmy.world or !general@lemmy.world or other instances' general discussion/chat communities if they don't have a tv/show community to cross-post to, supposing that it's okay by their rules.
I'd recommend adjusting them a little to better fit the vibes of the relevant communities you're cross-posting to for better reception btw, so it doesn't feel like you're just tossing stuff at'em. Altogether it's admittedly a lot, but I don't think anyone's ever said community building is a little. Best of luck!
Thank you very much! :)
Can we talk about how bad season 4 of True Detective is?
Havent't watched any other season of true detective except season 1.
i was hopeful. but it is a stinker
It’s just an Alaskan ghost hunting show now
fuck yea
I rarely found insightful comments on Reddit. Good movie reviews are usually hard to find. Especially if you're looking for someone who at least gives a second thought to critical theory. I've run into thoughtful people here.
You're better off looking for as book club or something like that if you want engaging discussions. A lot of local community colleges are cheap and have courses for cinema or lit. Or, start that community here. There are some instances that don't even allow down votes, if you're looking for a positive experience. Don't let that last point derail, though.
Otherwise, maybe the broader thing you're talking about is the mono culture. The mono culture was gone long before Reddit shit the bed. There were no more tv shows that everyone watched then talked about around the water cooler. It's crazy to think about, but people were actually nuts about who shot jr. Like everyone wanted to know. It would be like your grandma knowing who mrbeast is and having an opinion about his shit ghost burgers and the drama around him trying to undercut franchises so he could get the rights back, or something.
Anyway, an active reddit community gave that feeling back. It was a nice warm hug when it worked. I can sympathize with the loss of that feeling. I'll add to what others have said here about rebuilding. Not only will we get back to that place, but it'll be better because there won't be some corporation owning everything with different goals.
