Disco Elysium for a 10er. Really, if you're someone who has even the most passing interest in CRPGs, story-centric games or strong character dialogue, you owe it to yourself to play this. It's beyond fantastic.

I'm not going to link directly to any pirated content as I don't want to break the c rules, but iirc the creators of Disco Elysium literally asked people to pirate the game instead of buying it, as none of the sale currently goes to them, seeing as they were (according to them) unfairly ousted and had lots of money kept from them.

There's a good summary here: https://www.pcgamer.com/disco-elysium-studio-declares-resolution-of-legal-battle-while-two-of-its-ousted-founders-insist-the-fight-continues-they-will-not-silence-us/

If you have time, I also recommend the People Make Games documentary that takes a look at and interview the people both sides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGIGA8taN-M

It's more than two hours, but it's worth every minute.

Disco Elysium is simply just a must have game for any gamer. Even if you don't normally like the genre, you will like Disco Elysium. The only way you could dislike Disco Elysium, is if you hate incredible writing.

I got bored of it. I don’t remember laughing at any jokes a single time, and I never felt like the stat build I started out with (one of the game’s presets) ever let me do anything fun.

[-] all-knight-party@kbin.cafe 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah I think saying it's a must have for any gamer is a bit too much, no game is for literally everyone. Disco Elysium's humor doesn't strike me as overly humorous anyway, it's not really a comedic game, more of a dry chuckle now and then.

And the fun is really just reading/hearing any of the dialogue or descriptions, it is very well written. You get a lot of different choices depending on the "build" stuff, but it's really mostly all well written and should be enjoyable if you're into the style at all

Looking at the best sellers list and I own the first 8 games... None of which I've finished...

[-] tburkhol@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Own 8/10 - assuming you count Phantom Liberty different from CP; finished 7/10 (likewise PL), mostly before this decade. Some of them before 2010. I wonder if I can still find my Baldur's Gate CDs...

I'm old.

Looking through the best seller list I saw spore and man I really wish someone would give that game another go. It was fun, but had issues obviously like the overselling of features.

Like a Dragon is on GOG without Denuvo, nice. I hadn't realized that before, I'm definitely gonna pick that up.

Oh wow… they have The Saboteur for $5. I didn’t know it was available on the PC. I loved that game, warts and all. IIRC it was the first game I ever worked to get 100% achievements on.

The night/day thematic thing, where sunshine kinda comes back to Paris as you liberate areas, was really nifty.

I wish I could get it running on steam deck. That game was my jam back in the 360 days

[-] robolemmy@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Shame to hear it doesn’t run on the steam deck. I use Linux on my gaming desktop and if it won’t work on the deck it usually won’t work on my desktop either

[-] tal@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I thought I remembered playing it on my Linux machine, but maybe I'm misremembering.

ProtonDB doesn't have any data:

googles

This guy is running it on the Steam Deck:

Anyone try Timberborn? I'm a fan of Spacehaven and Foundation, and Timberborn looked interesting

[-] Kaldo@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

It is very charming and enjoyable but there's little to do in the endgame, and it kinda starts to get tedious even in midgame tbh. Everything else is pretty much perfect though, good performance, UI, modding support, lots of freedom and creativity when it comes to designing settlements... Just don't expect it to be too complex or demanding at any point.

[-] Zoidsberg@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

I love Timberborn. I haven't played the two games you've mentioned, so I can't commemt on how they compare, but it is a great game.

There's some lets-plays on youtube that'll give you a better feel for it than the trailers.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give youtube a shot!
