Here's something that never happened with Windows: Wifi becoming completely disabled because I installed proprietary graphics drivers while installing Kubuntu. Happened twice before I realized I couldn't do that during the install. Worked fine after that. Well, not totally fine. The desktop session would freeze up every time so I had to ctrl+alt+f3 to get a terminal session so I could command line update the system. After that I was finally able to get to a desktop and start using my system. Totally ready for every day users. I can't remember the last time I had Windows crash on me. On Manjaro I had my desktop session lock up or just a full system crash at least once a day. And holy cow, I haven't had to reboot that many times to install updates since the early 00s.

My experience is typical based on my interactions with people trying out Linux and giving up. And then getting snide comments from Linux cultists online. It's a small wonder that more people don't use Linux!

I notice you're not saying anything about the car or the house. Don't know much do you? You just let other people do it because otherwise you’d have to think about what you’re doing and gasp develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life!

You might not be saying that but I'll quote the smug OP who said:

But… but… then you’d have to think about what you’re doing and gasp develop a basic understanding of the technology that runs your life! Who has time for that nerd shit?

This attitude will keep people away from Linux way longer than will make sense as it grows.

I don’t need to know everything about an engine, but I have basic competency in changing my oil or replacing my air filter.

I don’t know everything about the structure of my home, but I know enough to install some shelves or blinds.

Great! So just like someone who knows how to install and remove software and update their system. The kind of thing they can do with Windows.

I work in IT and switched to Linux a few months ago because of Microsoft's latest moves. People saying that it's ready for every day use are out of their minds. I had nothing but problems with Manjaro, but I'm having a better experience on Kubuntu LTS. Now both of my monitors turn on every time! But sure, an every day person should contribute to the nouveau drivers to make Linux work with their specific monitor setup. A monitor setup that just works with Windows.

You're absolutely right about closed systems spying on you. That should be illegal. But to expect everyone to run Linux as it is today is patently ridiculous. I decided not to move my wife's laptop to Windows because I knew there'd be problems constantly that I didn't want to deal with.

I guess it would be better if Farmers were reading man pages to figure out why they bricked their system when trying to install new graphics drivers. Or figure out why they no longer can get to a desktop after installing graphics drivers only to find out that the compilation of the drivers failed completely silently which put their system into a state where they had to boot from a usb drive and rebuild their system.

No no, you don't understand. Because this person wants to learn about linux everyone should want to. Because if they want to it's the best. If you just want to use things that are easy and spend your free time on things you enjoy you're an IDIOT! Wake up, sheeple!

I'm assuming from this smug nonsense that you'd be able to fix your car if anything went wrong, right? What about if something structurally went wrong in your home? If you don't understand how an MRI machine works you better not get medical care!

What an absolutely brain dead take on what people should and shouldn't be doing with their time.

You're arguing for Harris to be a silver bullet by your own logic. What a smug hypocrite.

Why in the world would you visit a country where the secret police is actively snatching people off the street with no due process?
