As title says. I think my PC is using like a max of 500w when it's juicing but idles for less. I was thinking of using an ecoflow high grade setup for this. Anyone have experience doing something similar?

I might switch to a small micro tower setup by Dell or Lenovo that uses like 120w max. The new Mac minis seem to cap out at 39w though which is crazy.

Do you guys really buy into these self ads for influencers

It's a tale as old as time: YouTuber's PR team or the influencer themselves post the influencers face to /G/ and say "is he our savior?". Then people take the bait and ask who, along with original poster. The person then looks up guys name and watches their YouTube videos.

Somehow 🙄 the mods just don't see or take down the post! As if it's legitimate chatter about some influencer, who isn't tech.

...Do you guys actually fall for this shit?

No. They'll just name an entire lineup of the worlds biggest computers after your daughter.

I'll generalize and say there are many my age in their 20s that watch things like TikTok and shorts that are conditioned for the fastest intake of media. This means ignoring the written word outside of texts.

Even myself, if I see a wall of text in an article, I know to skip the fluffer ad-reads down to paragraph three, then skim. To be fair most articles could be wrapped up to maybe two paragraphs but get extended for ad spots. Outside the context of reading articles on say lemmy, especially online, there is a largely missed hear mean not what I'm saying operating in good faith that often gets missed online. For example if someone posts an article about how smoking kills you, and I post a comment that "yes but its a creature comfort" I am not refuting it kills you - I'm merely suggesting that its a rough world and that people have vices to cope.

Nuance and assumption that we're acknowledging it is often lost on people.

Hey folks. Just wanted to put out a good word about Nostr. I'm finding it to be pleasantly easy to use and very akin to twitter but uses soft servers in the form of relays. Its not quite moving away from servers but where decentralization is happening frequently, its nice to give that liberty back to users.

Anyways its worth a try, here are some web clients. Just make sure to save your PK its basically your login:

Honestly it's exhausting to the whole lemmy experience that every time something gets even slightly political, there's an extreme communist in the comments pushing their agenda.

I can literally say "hey man they all suck yo fuck politics am I right?" And in comes a guy who tells me I'm a Republican or Democrat or fuck America, whatever. I can even agree that the news is biased in America, and I'll still get the same response.

It makes conversations for the average consumer on the platform unproductive at best, unsettling in its worst form.

I think people forget that decentralized doesn't mean anonymous, and it also doesn't mean that server admins and servers aren't beholden to local laws

An old publication more relevant now than ever - The Cathedral and the Bazaar. A comparison of software practices in the early 2000s with some retrospective to how great software is built.

I think much of the writing can be applied to today's federated content models.

In particular:

  • The Mail Must Get Through
  • Necessary Preconditions for the Bazaar Style
  • The Importance of Having Users

the hateful browser

Holy shit man imagine if we judged every huge project by one asshole at the top. There wouldn't be a single thing to enjoy in this world.

Edit:

I am going to add more perspective to this, because holy shit people are so into eating nothing burgers.

Reddit/Twitter was a database and API that everyone was centralized onto, there was no choice. Brave you can literally fork because its open source. Aside from that this was literally the CEO's personal donation of $1000...in like 2014. Almost 10 yrs ago.

Elon, as CEO and on the X/Twitter brand:

What tech if any have you found interesting lately?

What tech concerns if any do you have as of late?

Mine:

  • concerned about the google web DRM. I've been digging into android and trying to give stock android a chance again but the DRM stuff makes me want to jump over to iOS for tap to pay + carplay and Graphene/Calyx for my daily internet usage. Android added a builtin ad ID to their phones which makes me pretty uncomfortable.
  • Decentralized Tech, like Radicle, Gitopia, Mango for Git and Ethereum DApps (again). Feels like there is a lot of good that can be done but anything I'd build with ethereum I'd really want to disambiguate from the culture of scam/scam coins. The notion that most successful platforms today are ones people can make a career off of like being an influencer isn't lost on me and I think ethereum offering ways to maybe appeal to that is good.
  • IPFS (interplanetary file system). Love the idea but can't seem to find a good entry point or an easy way to discover content and really understand how a consumer would user this outside of an app providing that contex/gateway for it to connect to
  • Nim Programming language: I love that it looks and reads like lisp/python but compiles like C. I feel like I adopted docker because python and nodejs weren't portable binaries.

title. We live in interesting times. Those especially traveled, would love to hear your input.

That gave me a good chuckle.

It's odd how we've commoditized such selfishly resource hungry transportation. I like walking to stuff as long as where I live is safe.

Welcome buddy. Welcome all sync users. The greatest part of the decentriverse is it's not yours or mine, it's no one's. Do as you please.

[-] Gnubyte@lemdit.com 47 points 1 year ago

Yeah I'm telling you. There is an older crowd that it doesn't matter what you say to them, they run on hate and they've been given a lot of fuel.

Being a US citizen, it is interesting to observe my social circles reactions to both President Biden and President Trump.

Most of the men I know trend towards being pro Trump and I don't think this will sit well with them. The reason being that I think it is less about what Trump actually does to them, but rather what he represents. Last I checked via wikipedia, Trump has anti trans campaign points for 2024.The trend I notice is that men I knew who grew up going to church feel displaced by their traditional view being eroded by things like LGBT, gender identity questions, and changing of the times in general. While the women I know who even often date these men the opposite; they feel more comfortable being accepting of everyone by default.

Should Trump be convicted, I think it will alienate a group of voters into full disbelief of the existing system. The question is does that matter at all in the grand scheme of things or should these voters feel slighted - will that matter since they have no real recourse or will they simply forget Trump given time.

In preparation for comments on this - please don't try to assign me politically. I'm simply remarking on what I've observed as a citizen when speaking with other adults in my life.

Hey all!

I'm seeking guidance. I have a lot of apps that use ORMs like Mongoose or Sequelize or Sqlalchemy, or even just init-db scripts with raw SQL. Point is a lot of apps have changes to the data layer. When we program and make apps they tend to describe how they need to see a database. Sometimes its no trivial feat to do an upgrade - and even if you have a CI/CD pipeline in place what does that look like to have something like even lemmy upgrade in a container.

If you have these apps in production how are you handling these apps? Both developer perspective and devops welcomed.

I see the devs offering insight into maybe how the backend recognizes database state, while the devops perhaps either describing process and implementation.

I went and deactivated my twitter accounts today. I got Lemmy and when I do my own servers via my own app, I'll enjoy a twitter alternative again. Edit: Im saying this because my mind went to action not bitching. I think the X rebrand is like a sign of the times and the official "okay twitters dead" moment.

Sigh. Whoever they have working in their DRM department has been an asshole for a long time now.

This is what the third or fourth - minimum - thing like this they've tried to pass in a few years? I actually like Google as a product family but every time they do this it hits me right in the "maybe I should reconsider" department. Its also usually met with a hard resounding no from everyone. Maybe its that they have a task force that is paid well to protect their ad interests and recover some sort of deficit they see in their ad product.

I donate to the EFF to fight things like this at a professional level...also good to point out though that its not just google's fault. If they build a moat for businesses and everyone installs one, that is everyone's fault.
