I feel like this article is rage bait that doesn't really understand software development. In software development, issues that completely block progress or functionality are significantly more important than system performance.
Even if we disregard that fixing performance is a massive undertaking, fixing the blocker first was absolutely the right move.
I migrated from Firefox over to Waterfox recently as well, though it was on a Windows machine, and I share your experience. It failed to import my bookmarks and settings from Firefox and I had to reinstall and reconfigure all plugins manually.
It is obviously only a single time issue, but the process could certainly be better.
Single issue voters got us to where we are today, and I genuinely think they do more harm than the cult itself.

You can thank Intuit, the company behind TurboTax, for making taxes as difficult as possible. They spend a lot of money lobbying to make filing taxes more difficult.
