What apps have you been using this year? Have you found new apps to fill a gap in your previous open-source use?

What is something that you wish had a good open-source alternative but does not at this time?

I'll start with two new addtions for me:

  • Capy Reader (code, F-Droid). While curating my Feedly subscriptions, I decided to try switching to some RSS feeds instead, which I had previously put off because I hadn't found a client I liked. Capy Reader is excellent both in performance and user interaction, and I find I much prefer reading my sources this way than through Feedly now.
  • Readeck (code). Not technically an app, but the website works perfectly well through a mobile browser. A read-it-later service that snapshots web pages and displays them in a friendly, customizable reader mode. The only downside is that it doesn't cache the full content of the saved pages offline, so you can't use it without Internet access.

if you regularly switch between espresso and pour over/immersion

I think this is the biggest con of this grinder. The dial does have multiple turns, and you will need multiple turns to go between espresso and filter range. So the problem then becomes keeping track of which range you are in and getting back to the other one. And because the dial doesn't have very high precision, relatively speaking, it will be hard to get back to the exact point in the other range where you were before.

To me, this would become frustrating quickly. If a small difference in grind setting is fine for filter, I would find that for espresso I have to spend a lot more time dialing in, and, the worst of it , that I would have to re-dial whenever I switch back from filter.

While I think it's a good grinder for espresso overall, I would personally not get this if I plan to alternate between filter and espresso. I would perhaps look for a grinder without multiple turns, one where getting back to the previous position is easier and more obvious.

Oh, hahaa, I forgot about that! I don't have a food processor big or sturdy enough, so I just make it by hand. Still works great!

I've made several of his dough recipes (no-knead, same-day NY, cold-fermented NY) and they all work really well. No other recipe I've tried has been so foolproof.

If the data is "irreplaceable", you shouldn't keep only a single copy of it.

This is the normal level of quality you can expect from Newsweek, unfortunately.

It seems the users are explicitly making the posts public. I know it's cool to hate on Meta, but the issue here seems to be more that some people don't understand the consequences of making public posts on the Internet.

Thanks! What is it about usability that has got worse after the update?

What are some UI aspects that got worse to use after the update?

Can anyone share experience about power usage, performance, and functionality on older devices?

Did you encounter any bugs or missing features?

Did you use the latest commit or the release from 2023?

I have a 3-year-old Samsung. Most of the time I keep it between 30 and 80%, with the occasional full charge about once a month. It has always had fast charging disabled in settings.

AccuBattery shows the health at 88%, and the battery life is noticeably worse than it was initially. I used to get two days of light usage between 80 and 30, but now it barely lasts one. With GPS and camera usage, that lasts about half a day.

In comparison, my previous phone, a OnePlus with no charging limit and always charged on its fast charger, also reached 85% after just under 4 years.

So, I don’t think it has been worth intentionally crippling my battery life with this phone.

The Edge 20 series isn't on the list and it's only about 2 years old...

After the latest update, instance names have disappeared from the subscription section on the navigation drawer. There doesn't seem to a be setting to bring those back. Without them, it's hard to distinguish between communities with similar names on different instances.

I often find image posts where clicking on the thumbnail doesn't load the picture and shows a generic error message. If I copy the image link, I can open it ok in the browser. I haven't been able to tie this to specific instances or communities, so I don't know what might be causing it.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

In another thread, I read a user's comment about how the lemmy experience has got progressively worse over the past few months, with a lot more trash content making it to their front page.

Is this your experience? How was lemmy when you joined and how do you think it's changed?

Yes, I've read many posts the current state of reddit. But today, somehow I thought it can't be that bad if I just go looking for some funny videos.

Boy, was I wrong. This post was at the top of my feed, and briefly scrolling through the comments got me out of there without looking at anything else ☠️

Oh, well, I tried...

Photon Frontend for Lemmings.world? (self.lemmings_world_instance)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by TurboLag to c/lemmings_world_instance

The Photon frontend has recently reached feature parity with the official Lemmy frontend. It has a really nice UI and I like using it alongside Alexandrite.

@rikudou@lemmings.world would you consider hosting a copy for Lemmings.world, similar to how Alexandrite is available at a.lemmings.world?

Thanks in advance!

On the old site, there were a number of funny video communities with regular posts, for example /r/Unexpected, /r/PublicFreakout, or /r/WhatCouldGoWrong. While there are plenty of memes on Lemmy, we have relatively little video content. Those of you who used to frequent video subs, what have you replaced them with since coming to Lemmy?
