If it wasn't Microsoft it would have been someone else. The recurring revenue is how businesses have decided is the most effective way to make a profit. The only way that it will cease is for everyone to stop participating in it.

2050 was always meant to be a kick the can down the road kind of idea. Appeasement for those concerned - status quo for the people making money in those businesses now. There was never any idea to change, perhaps only a hope that by 2050 other solutions would have presented themselves.

Alternative? Thanks to capitalism creating monopolies, there are 2 viable companies that manufacture commercial airplanes. Boeing and Airbus. That's it. Pick your poison.
