I think that's neither. The whole thing boils down for me to an adult trying to strike a deal with a kid so the kid gives up their ice cream, the kid saying "no!", and then the adult still grabbing the ice cream by force.
In other words I think that Meta run some risk assessment on the move, and decided that it was still profitable.

Okay, I know that this will sound silly, but I'll use my cat as an example.
She does nothing but sleep, eat, shit. She's rather defensive of her personal space, and often hurts us for that. 3AM she woke me up with loud noises because she wanted to play. The floor, my clothes, my keyboard, there's cat hair everywhere, and without her I'd probably need to clean a fraction of what I do.
Would I get rid of her? FUCK NO. Because even if she's annoying, I still love her and I want her around. It would be certainly better if I didn't get those annoyances but hey, nobody is perfect. And she gives me happiness on the small things, like when she headbutts my leg or "mrrown-wown?" at me.
It's perfectly possible that you are in a similar situation as my cat. Except that, as a human being, you understand that you're hurting people, and you can reflect on your behaviour and change it for the best of the ones around you. But it's still perfectly possible that you're underestimating the positive impact that you have in their lives. And at the end of the day, we all are like this, our social interactions are usually a mix of positive and negative.

That said what an amazing find. Most of the things that Cory explains in this video are the things that he already explained through text. Even then, it's great to hear him talking, even if he goes on 10min parentheses.
I think that the most relevant parts are, up to ~25:00, in my own words:
- The four steps of enshittification - 1) platform is nice for the users, 2) platform backstabs users to be nice for businesses, 3) platform backstabs businesses to hoard the value for itself, 4) platform dies
- The three criteria that ensure enshittification: 1) mono/oligopoly, 2) ability to change the rules for the users and work around legislations regarding labour, privacy, or fair trading laws, 3) ability to change the laws to outlaw users and other companies fighting back.
Later on he'll talk about how to bring a "good internet" up, without enshittification, but I'm still watching the video.
In the context of Reddit the whole thing sounds a lot like "we tried to play the enshittification game like the adults, but we're just a bunch of little greedy pigboys". Reddit is trying to go to the second step of enshittification, but it is not in a good position to be nice for businesses - why would you advertise in a site that is leaking users and that is clearly becoming unmanageable? It was able to backstab the users, and that's it.

The best mayo is the one that you whisk at home, using one raw yolk and one cooked yolk (yup). I'm half-joking with the above (you mentioned mayo as an example, not the point). I agree with your point - Lemmy will miss that sort of knowledge for some time, while Reddit is drowning itself in a sea of noise.
