The font is Revue! People often say that their first love-hate font was Comic Sans - well, this was the first font I thought was pretty damn cool and I saw it getting run to the ground with overuse in early 1990s. It was pretty much in half of the ads in early 1990s. (My theory: It was bundled with a popular graphic design passion package / clipart bundle, Arts & Letters, and everyone made their ads with it. I can't wait for the day when I finally get arsed to install Windows 3.0 environment and my copy of Arts & Letters and prove the doubters wrong)

I half expected the first comment about the font to be about The Room to be honest.

Sorry for the potato photograph, my phone was a potato, I was a student after all

Most of my photography gear falls under "well, that money could have been spent more wisely". But photography has been one of my major ways of dealing with depression, so I absolutely don't regret it. I can't really put into words how good it felt to finally get a Camera That Didn't Suck.

They attacked gamers.
Gamers.

(I don't remember how the rest of the copypasta goes, because I'm a leftist video game enjoyer and try to distance myself from Gamers®.)

That said this probably won't go anywhere. In the Gamergate days the right wingers kept outright insulting Gamers® and the Gamers® just did some mental gymnastics. Political literacy among Gamers® has gone to even deeper depths since.

It was sound-proof

Ah. The Scream Closet.

but the boss called me over

Ah, the ol' Sci-Fi classic: I Have A Scream Closet, But I Cannot Scream.

reCAPTCHA is exploiting users for profit

Well duh.

reCAPTCHA started out as a clever way to improve the quality of OCRing books for Distributed Proofreaders / Project Gutenberg. You know, giving to the community, improving access to public-domain texts. Then Google acquired them. Text CAPTCHAs got phased out. No more of that stuff, just computer vision rubbish to improve Google's own AI models and services.

If they had continued to depend on tasks that directly help community, Google would at least have had to constantly make sure the community's concerns are met. But if they only have to answer to themselves for the quality of the data and nobody else even gets to see it, well, of course it turned into yet another mildly neglected Google project.

I'm a Debian fan, and even I think it's absolutely preferable that app developers publish a Flatpak over the mildly janky mess of adding a new APT source. (It used to be simple and beautiful, just stick a new file in APT sources. Now Debian insists we add the GPG keys manually. Like cavemen.)

JavaScript is powerful

Old joke (yes, you can tell):

"JavaScript: You shoot yourself in the foot. If using Netscape, your arm falls off. If using Internet Explorer, your head explodes."

NOP is $EA, of course, and... um...

...sorry, I'm just a Commodore 64 scrub, I don't know nothing about this high and mighty Intel 8086 nonsense.

[looking up]

...it's 0x90 on IA-32? WHAT? Someone told me every processor used 0xEA because that was commonly agreed and readily apparent. ...guess I was wrong

Here's an amazing business plan: take the old designs for a railbus. Remove chassis, design a new chassis, but make it all futuristic. Show it to the investors. They'll say "but I want a pod!" And then you say "But it is a pod. A megapod, even!" And they'll squint and go "oh I see. Let's make 1000 of them."

(And actually this is exactly what people have done in the past. Cool futuristic exterior hiding what's basically just a diesel bus with train wheels.)

When I read the sentence, I was like "Wh... w... how? WHY? ...and OF COURSE it was distributed via FTP, I mean, what else do you use for entertainment in AIX. Or business, for that matter."

My brain goes all mushy and mellow when it notices that I'm apparently in proximity of a slower kind of a fellow. 🐢

A lot has changed since the late 1980s. I can now run Thunder Blade off of a flash cartridge (EasyFlash3). And in general I've grown so cynical of in-game product placement that it's not even funny.

Ronald Reagan is the last US President to establish Presidential Vigilante Martial Arts Rescue Rewards, way back in 1988. Biden should totally one-up this while he's in charge. The Ninja Turtles are crying for one pizza minimum wage. Turtles live for a long time, you know.

To be perfectly honest, this makes it sound like it aired here in the saturday mornings. Hell, sunday mornings. ...It did not. Deep into weekend nights, as far as I can recall, and obviously this thing here is a fandub - it aired here in Japanese.

(Not my image, so I didn't actually measure this buddy's speed, sorry. I don't know where this was actually taken or what tortoise species this is. This may LOOK like a left hand drive country, but do the tortoises know the traffic laws? ...that's another matter, you know.)

Windows devs: "We need to ask the keyboard makers to add a special key for OS stuff. A Windows key. Yeah."

KDE devs: "There's something special about the K key, and none of us can put it to words."

Since it's not mentioned in the article: the device is a Nokia 9200 series Communicator. Had a perfectly functional SMS app for its era, of course.

Nokia Communicators were absolutely rad. Had a 9110 and it was incredible.
