Its serving patriotism not nationalism
Patriotism is an expression of nationalism in which there's stirring music and a giant national flag in the background.
I think this is like saying chemistry is just applied physics which is just applied math, so chemistry doesn't matter or is less.
There's a distinction.
I'm not proud to be Canadian because I hate others or think less of them. I'm proud to be Canadian because I feel as a country we stand for good things, and I am proud of my heritage here.
We have beautiful lands, thoughtful and talented people, good opportunities, and some fantastic traditions and idols.
We aren't perfect, but I certainly am proud of our ideals and people.
Well, fair enough, there's room for disagreement. There are many fine distinctions that get made, and the exact relationship between nation, state, and patriotism is always controversial. As I see it, love for the land and people is near one end of a spectrum, flag waving and devotion to the sovereign crown of Canada near the other. If there's a dividing line somewhere, not everyone draws it in the same place.
Patriotism is "yay us", nationalism is "fuck everyone else". This video is most definitely the first.
Patriotism is lying to yourself about yourself. Nationalism is lying to yourself about others. Both are done for the purpose of moral licensing; they give us permission to act badly.
