Tourists should avoid the USA (not to blame the tourists in this story, of course)

American citizens should be avoiding the USA at this point as well. No-one is safe.

I'm an American citizen and I got out. Absolutely zero regrets. Apparently it's rapidly becoming increasingly common

Where did you go, if you don’t mind sharing? What was the process like?

I am using my position to help my local community back home :)

No-one is safe.

Not until we make the police and ICE agents feel unsafe.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 4 points 2 months ago

Not even Elon Musk himself apparently.

We can take a few american refugees, but we should limit it to the same measly numbers that the US has been accepting. That would be 50 000 per year.

Over a few millenia we could probably provide refuge for the vulnerable populations in the USA.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Americans hardly qualify as "refugees", please don't insult those who are.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Not yet. Not most of them.

I blame the parent. Nobody with the resources necessary for an international vacation has any excuse for being ignorant of the current political state of the US, our government is actively targeting visibly hispanic people regardless of legality and has not been quiet about it. Even if their trip had gone smoothly every dollar they spent here would be indirectly supporting the shit our government is doing. The child had no choice in the matter, the parent was a fucking moron who volunteered their child for a completely avoidable traumatic experience and helped fund Trump's crimes in the deal.

[–] insaneinthemembrane@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's hard for people to believe this kind of crazy though.

[–] Amnesigenic@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It shouldn't be, the evidence has been plentiful and easily available. It's not particularly crazy either, evil for sure but entirely in line with the interests of our ruling class and extremely historically precedented. Some folks just have to learn the hard way I guess.

[–] insaneinthemembrane@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I get it, but if you pitched this to a movie studio they'd say it was far fetched, so the average person can be forgiven, I think.

[–] Amnesigenic@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Movie studios are frequently run by morons, anyone who isn't completely politically & historically illiterate could tell you it's not far-fetched at all, and this person had the money for an international vacation so they're definitely not representative of the average anyway

[–] insaneinthemembrane@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I think you're underestimating the normalcy bias and overestimating how much the average person outside the US understands about what's going on there.

Do we know it was a pure tourist visit and they could choose the location? Many state departments are already flagging the US with a state instability warning if not no-go, so I'd assume she (or the husband) was here on business, or because there were circumstances that pushed them.

To be fair, NYC is pretty blue, it's just the NYPD that has been for decades a threat to the people, especially nonwhites, with Bloomberg's mayorship taking much of the blame.
