So jail right? Right?! Who am I kidding....

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 93 points 2 months ago

No, no jail. Instead we’re going to let them merge with Albertsons. So now twice as many grocery stores can price gouge.

[-] protist@mander.xyz 38 points 2 months ago

I know it's easy to be cynical, but isn't all this coming out specifically because the FTC under the Biden Administration sued to stop this merger? Credit where credit is due for that.

[-] CaptainSpaceman@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

We can talk about nationalizing kroger now, right? Right??!!

[-] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

We haven’t even bailed them out twenty times yet, how dare you propose something logical.

[-] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

Why? That's Capitalism and we live in a capitalist society

Anyone with grade 5 math skills could have reached the same conclusion. 8% interest, 30% price increase. It's not hard. Oh, and let's not forget that grocery chains reported record profits that year.

[-] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 61 points 2 months ago

I buy most of my groceries at a local employee owned chain. It's amazing how they were able to avoid so much of the massive increase in costs that larger chains were experiencing. It's like they had a completely different supply chain that wasn't anywhere near as inflated. Oh sure, certain brands seemed to be going way up in price, but other items from competing brands didn't. Meanwhile at Walmart, everything went way up in price, and at a much faster pace. Weird how that works.

I guess the giant monopolies must not have the resources and experience required to run an efficient business. How else can you explain the disparity?

[-] Monstrosity@lemm.ee 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Ooooh, I'm pretty sure I know the employee owned chain you speak of because I shop there too. I started going when some of Safeway's prices mysteriously doubled for no apparent reason. I'm so happy I made the switch. Those greedy pigs at Safeway did me a favor.

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 46 points 2 months ago

Not surprised in the slightest. Our offbrand kroger has been the most expensive retailer in the area, and has the lowest quality produce. Plus, they treat their employees like shit and disregarded known allergens to shove a nut allergic person into the bakery where they'd have to be in contact with their allergen repeatedly...

Fuckers.

[-] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 46 points 2 months ago

It's too bad doing LITERALLY ANYTHING would be SOCIALISM!

[-] Philharmonic3@lemmy.world 35 points 2 months ago

Yeah no fucking shit

[-] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 26 points 2 months ago

Kroger executives are basically inviting 5 finger discounts

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

If you see someone shoplifting from a Kroger, you have a moral obligation to create a diversion.

[-] garpujol@discuss.online 8 points 2 months ago

Can we use those fingers to punch them instead?

[-] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

Why not both?

[-] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago
[-] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

Which they seem to be keenly aware of, since the self-checkout you're forced to use because there's only ever one staffed register constantly accuses you of theft if you so much as move your bagged groceries. God how I wish I had more grocery options in my area.

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

They also do literally nothing to stop it. Ask me how I know.

Not saying everyone could just throw on an n95 and stop paying for their groceries, but you really could.

[-] DogPeePoo@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Do you think that they do nothing to stop it in order to prevent perpetrator injuries and/or collateral bystander injuries and the associated lawsuits that could result?

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Its to prevent violence in my opinion. Almost noone there is permitted to confront anyone. The loss prevention person assigned to the store rotates, and is only there maybe once every few weeks.

All of that means it takes years for them to case build enough to get police involved, at least in certain areas. Covid also made it normal to disguise yourself, which is far easier to argue against than a full face video, even with their video quality being shit.

They have an kroger message board for employees and you can read what their LP employees talk about there. Kind of odd how all that works.

[-] omarfw@lemmy.world 25 points 2 months ago

Mega corporations are a problem we need to solve as a society.

[-] MellowYellow13@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Capitalism is the problem

[-] Lennnny@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago
[-] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world -5 points 2 months ago

Great. Then they'll raise prices more. Good thinking!

[-] bestagon@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

The prices will continue to be imaginary as you run off with your items

[-] Tja@programming.dev 8 points 2 months ago

Peak lemmy right here.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Evidently they'll raise them regardless.

[-] kinkles@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 months ago

Aldi is a lifesaver in these trying times

[-] f1error@thelemmy.club 8 points 2 months ago

I like the idea of Aldi, but when I walk into my local one I'm hit with a huge wave of sadness and depression. I cannot shop there, I wish I could, as I said I like the idea.

[-] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

I have a similar issue with Safeway. Just something about the color/lighting/employees clear sense of doom really gets me.

[-] dalekcaan@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

I love Aldi and they're always the first place I shop, but their selection is a bit limited and the produce is hit-or-miss, at least in my area. Unfortunately around me that only leaves Kroger as the next best option.

[-] Myxomatosis@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Greedy fucks like this deserve treatment with a device that rhymes with creatine.

[-] Zachariah@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Ovaltine? I wouldn’t wish that stuff on my worst enemy!

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 12 points 2 months ago

Hey look.

It's my shocked face.

Can you tell I'm shocked?

I'm going for "shocked".
