Me while doing laundry:
Listening to songs about being Dressed as goblins! Dressed as goblins! Dressed as goblins! Dressed as goblins! ...
There's a dragon ripping you to shreds, it wants to be your friend, it's just trying to impress you!
Is that mr john goblikon in your pocket or are you happy to see me
...yes
Yeah, we're gonna need some band names here.
I'll start: They're more satanic than political, but Bridge City Sinners are a pretty solid folk punk group with songs about everything from mental health struggles to Uruk Hai, including a Jungle Book cover from their early days.
Anything associated with Pat the Bunny will slap (wingnut dishwashers union, ramshackle glory)
Big fan of AJJ, Days and Daze and the mountain goats
Edit: For an Old Kentucky Anarchist by the Orphans
Double Edit: Mischief Brew, duh...
Harley Poe, apes of the state, johnny hobo and the freight trains (Pat), local news legend, holy locusts, the taxpayers, stick and poke, Blackbird raum, Chad hates George (Jesse from Dayz), ghost mice (although there's a bunch of stuff with their singer that makes me not want to listen to him), and many others.
Definitely one of my favorite genres. Feel free if anyone wants more suggestions.
Grace Petrie is great for queer folk punk
Thanks for the recs! The Mountain Goats is interesting, as I would have classified them more as lo-fi or even singer-songwriter, rather than any sort of punk (but then I've mostly listened to All Hail West Texas and The Sunset Tree, so my experience is limited)
Tbf, I have a broader definition of punk than most.
Well, I will agree that punk as a DIY and political ethos is more in keeping with the original spirit of the punk movement, so by that token, The Mountain Goats would fit. I just hadn't considered classifying them as such.
♫Cause Baby, I'm an anarchist
You're a spineless liberal♫
Lotta good recommendations but I'd add Defiance, Ohio to the list.
Just don’t bother going there. The band is much better than the town
Baby, I'm an Anarchist! by Against Me!
We don't get tired, we get even, by Pat the Bunny
Oh shit. I saw them open for Frank Turner a couple weeks ago. Awesome show!
I have two massive playlists I found if you'd like some links.
Absolutely. I've been more into satanic folk and stoner/doom metal than punk lately, but I'm always looking for a new band/genre to obsess over
Hopefully you are familiar with Amigo the Devil, if not please get on that right away
Edit to add some killer stoner/doom: Froglord, Hippie Death Cult, Snakemother, Year of the Cobra
Are you me? I love Amigo the Devil, and I've got HDC and YotC on vinyl. I haven't listened to much Froglord other than their split with Bog Wizard, and Snakemother is new to me, so I'll have to get on that.
Also, don't sleep on the solo albums from Dorthia Cotrell of Windhand. Some pretty solid doom folk
edit: Oh man, the reviews of Snakemother comparing them to both Faetooth and YOB have got me salivating. I can't wait 'til I get home from work to sit down with my nice headphones and dig in.
Are you me?
when you said "more into satanic folk and stoner/doom metal lately" I had the same thought lol
Froglord's entire discography is fantastic and they show no signs of slowing down. I hope they manage to do a US tour at some point
Definitely familiar with Windhand but probably haven't taken a deep enough dive on Dorthia's solo work tbh
Snakemother is a fairly new band (~couple years young) out of SF/Oakland that has been putting in hard work as a local opener in the doom/heavy psych scene - including for Faetooth a couple times. Their self-titled album is just the right length to play live (just over a half hour long) and I've been told that new music is getting published soon :) Hope you enjoy!
Fuck the man!
And these darn tough grass stains!
Ok someone must be watching me.
Conversely ... I usually listen to Pavarotti and Puccini operas when working in my garage.
If anyone's into Ska punk (particularly inspired by Streetlight Manifesto) then Faintest Idea is a great leftist ska band that I highly recommend.
Edit: Against All Authority is another good band I recommend
Oh this is sounding lovely, going to add that to some playlists. If you don't mind having the lyrics in french, try listening to the older stuff from La Ruda Salska. More ska than punk but so good and great melodies so I think you should enjoy it regardless of understanding the lyrics.
