Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested a ceasefire deal could be struck if Ukrainian territory he controls could be taken "under the NATO umbrella" - allowing him to negotiate the return of the rest later "in a diplomatic way".

That would really suck for the people under Russian occupation. But be really good for all the other people...

Probably the best option left now that Trump will just throw him to the wolves

It would probably come with the safe passage to Ukraine...

It won't. Russia ABSOLUTELY needs those people because they've thrown hundreds of thousands of able-bodied men (and, reportedly, a lot of less-than-able-bodied men as well) into the meatgrinder for this war. That's part of why they've taken the old imperial strategy of deporting a LOT of the people in conquered areas to areas away from the fighting - it's part to get them out of the way, but also part to divorce them from that area, and make it a HELL of a lot harder to get back there (if there's even a "there" to go back to).

In other words, "we know we shoved you and your family into a bus at gunpoint and dumped you in Siberia, but if you wanna go home, you'll need to find your own way. Also don't forget rent is due the 1st."

Yes, and Russia was already facing a demographic crisis before the war. Its part of why they're kidnapping children.

Yep, they have an ongoing drug and AIDS crisis, and lost a lot of people to Covid since they only had their own vaccine, refusing other ones, which only worked in about half the cases though and which people were very sceptical of since the anti-vaccine propaganda on social media started by Russian bots to weaken the West backfired since Russians believed it as well.

Fuck. I knew things were going badly for Ukraine, but not this badly.

The US is providing a lot of resources to Ukraine and the second Trump takes over the White House, Ukraine loses that support.

This is one of several things he's said in the last couple weeks. He essentially threw it out there during an interview to let NATO and Russia know that's a deal he'd take. He's also said they're going to fight until the Ruble reaches the center of the earth. (Not his exact words)

It's political messaging. They still have a lot of levers they can pull.

That’s good to know. Thanks!

I think he is being idealistic about Republicans' support for NATO. When Russia attacks Ukraine again, Trump will not support NATO.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Europe will, though, in full force. European Union even more so when Ukraine is a member

[–] nomous@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

This was my interpretation as well. Zelenskyy sees the writing on the wall, U.S. support has an expiration date. He needs to make his case now so he's part of NATO before Trump tries to hang Ukraine and NATO out to dry.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Anything where Ukraine doesn't end as a full NATO member I suicide for Ukraine and zelenski personally. Putin has shown he doesn't care, he won't stop, and any agreement made will be broken the second people turn their heads around.

Ukraine becomes a full NATO and European Union or they're dead, and I'm sure zelenski is VERY aware of this

EU Defence pact would be a similar level of security, especially with Trump in the White House.

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

Erdogan just gonna veto it lol
