What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

MODERATORS

Clear censorship and bias of the admins and mods of .ml. As long as you're saying things that align with the tankie mindset, it's all good. @BrainInABox@lemmy.ml has gotten so bad lately that some of their comments have started to get removed, but no bans in sight when anybody (i.e. those not with the IN crowd) else would have gotten at a minimum a 30 day ban from multiple .ml comms had they even gotten close to the things Brain has been saying LONG ago.

That tells me they fully agree with what they're saying, but are just doing damage control.

After this post went live Brain did catch a ban for a whopping....24 hours lol talk about getting the "Kid Glove" treatment

What the fuck is up with this braininabox guy lol. each time you talk to him he acts like you slapped his mother, at least from the few times i've directly interacted with him. (And each comment i see from him is exactly like that)

Like fucking chill dude, lol. It's the goddamn internet. Maybe he should take a break.

Also, the comment was literally calling out people who voted for trump, which basically everyone agrees are shitheads. The fact he got so offended by it is... odd.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 18 points 16 hours ago

I love (/s) that they're going all-in on normalizing Trump too. What selfless heroes of the proletariat.

Who said it was censorship free? They're very pro censorship, in fact most people are, actually.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

It's a common trope amongst the big tankies "[Instance (usually .world or .ee)] is full of censorship and Reddit-like mods unlike us where you can be free!"

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 12 hours ago

Yeah they complain when they're censored, but love when they're the ones censoring. Just try and say "free speech is good" literally anywhere on lemmy, you'll be called a nazi. Same goes for most sites for most political leanings, even many that do claim they like free speech, post something anathema to their hivemind and you very well may be banned.

Very few actually want free speech, because it includes speech they think is bad and almost universally they think that should be shunned to make them more comfortable, that goes for tankies and nazis and everyone in between.

I've still never seen anyone claim them to be free speech advocates, especially not anyone that runs those instances. I have seen the users complain about being censored elsewhere though, to be fair, you're definitely right about that.

What is censored on these instances? I haven’t seen much except against far right ideas. Not sure what they’re complaining about.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

A perfect example of the bias I just saw

For merely being earnest and saying "tankie instances" caught a 30 day ban within an hour

Compare and contrasted with Brains 24 hour ban for what they've been saying....is telling

Once they block you... Block them!

And move on... Fedi has plenty of room for proper discourse

Let them their echo chambers

Their modding is properly documented with these sub's and modlog.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

While I do kind of agree, I worry if there's not enough resistance to them "in the wild" on the Lemmy-verse we might end up with a rep for being "A place for tankies" or even "Voat 2.0"

I've already seen some comments in the past on Reddit along the lines of "I tried Lemmy, but it seems to be just Tankies there"

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I see your point but when you block their sub's, you can still battle them off their servers ;)

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Ohhh I thought you were talking about an instance block, yea for sure blocking individual comms is a lot better in that case lol

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 1 points 14 hours ago

I don't support server blocks as it inherently not how I operate.

I only block threat actors outright... Like nicole which is useless.

Makes as much sense as "I tried email, but it seems to be just Tankies who use it"

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Your email has an algorithmic feed?

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Lemmy doesn't have an algorithm tho. You either browse all comms your instance is federated with, or those you've explicitly subscribed to.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

So a set of predefined filters decide the subset of data I will see on the fediverse?

I think there's a word for personalized data feeds.

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 hours ago

It doesn't 'personalize' it for you though, you do that for yourself

All the default sorting algorithms do is sort by basic global metrics like time and activity - anything else is done by the user (blocking, subscribing, ect) and the instance (federation or banning).

People misunderstand just how broad a term 'algorithm' actually is.

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

It's got an inbox and a spam folder and I use the client to subscribe to RSS feeds. Email and lemmy have more in common than they have differences.

You're using an open source platform bud, you have complete control over your 'algorithmic' feed. People just seem to want control over other people's feeds, too.

Makes as much sense as “I tried email, but it seems to be just Tankies who use it”

Email isn't really community oriented.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, I blocked .ml as a whole. Just a garbage instance full of the kind of people reddit loves.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Eh, there are some decent communities, I'm still subbed to a few. But I jumped ship on a bunch once a reasonable alternative not hosted there became somewhat popular.

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

What is the context of what Israel apparently did? Just for my own curiosity.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (2 children)

~~The ceasefire ended and Israel resumed~~ Israel ended the ceasefire and resumed their ~~genocide~~ "war"

The comment was on a post with an image of the horrors Israel is commiting

[–] rockerface@lemm.ee 9 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck Israel, Fuck Russia and fuck US too while we're at it.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

Hell yeah! Fuck authoritarianism everywhere be it US flavored or China flavored or Russia or Israel

[–] anarchiddy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The ceasefire ended

Just want to point out the passive language there - it didn't just 'end' by itself, Isreal ended it

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Ah, it seemed from the news it had just "expired", I'll update it thanks
