The Department of Homeland Security said it will seek the arrest and deportation of those subject to the policy change if they fail to depart the U.S. in the next 30 days. Officials are urging migrants to use the newly repurposed CBP Home smartphone app to register for self-deportation.

"Please use our smartphone app to register with the gestapo" isn't the cyberpunk future I wanted.

Please use our smartphone app

Already existed before this administration. The only difference being the previous administration was slightly more humane to immigrants.

What say the people who were saying he's only deporting people who were here illegally? They called us irrational for thinking he'd strip legal immigrants of their status. Next, he'll try to take citizenship away from citizens.

Next, he’ll try to take citizenship away from citizens.

Denaturalization takes too much work and only works on naturalized citizens. He'd just skip all that deport them anyways and then if he gets called out, go "oopsie" and take 4 years to "process"/"verify" their citizenship status, meanwhile trying to seize any of their assets in the US.

[–] Botanicals@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago

That is absolutely next. Watch who the news stirs up controversy against and they will be the next target. Venezuelans are a good example of this because there were several news campaigns to tarnish them last year that are fueling the hate now.

Y'all better start learning to garden. The crops are going to be rotting in the fields this year. And no country is going to be interested in shipping any in. Ya know, tarrifs and friendly with russia and such.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I'm surprised more people aren't doing this.

out of my community of around 200 households, three are building or expanding their garden and I am one of the three.

I've got a nice little perch on my roof that overlooks my garden too, you know, for the thieves when they realize they fucked up.

Then you just get free meat

[–] glitch1985@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

well, if anyone still needed proof this is a racist thing, here it is. its not about legal status, its about non-white people.

most of us already knew.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 132 points 1 day ago (2 children)

removing 500,000 employees/customers from the economy, sounds like Trump is pushing for recession in more than one way

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 hours ago

Our birth rate is already so low or in danger. Any country not allowing migrants in is toast

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I can't help but wonder what the plan is to replace those employees.

That's 500k highly motivated dedicated employees.

Are they going to make a slave class out of homeless people, substance abusers, people with mental health disorders, et cetera?

Maybe invite the same people back on much worse terms. Indebted servitude with no pathway to citizenship.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 hours ago

Destroy social security. Price houses out of reach for old people the old people work in the fields until death.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 18 points 17 hours ago

They literally sent over 150 people to a slave labor camps without due process against a judge's explicit orders.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Going to? Have you been living under a rock where there is no private prison industrial complex? They've been jailing people and using them for slave labor for centuries.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

Yep, concentration camps in Nazi Germany were first and foremost work camps. When their slaves I mean prisoners with jobs didn't die fast enough from exhaustion, only then did they turn into death camps.

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

A) a slave class? Yes.

B) also robots.

[–] braydan@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

reminds me of the movie "a scanner darkley".... cook peoples brains with drugs, then supply them farming jobs at the farm that makes the drugs

[–] natecox@programming.dev 90 points 1 day ago

GOP: “We only want to deport the illegals, if they want to be here they should do it legally”

Immigrants: “ok, we’ll come on this program specifically designed to allow a legal pathway to citizenship”

GOP: “No not like that!”

Honestly at this point im getting a little jealous some of them have somewhere to go that isn't so...Hitlery.

The only reason why people sacrifice so much to move to another country is because their country of origin is terrible. This is just choosing between two evils. Yes, you escape the fascism of the US, but your problems are not exactly solved.

Something like Canada accepting them would be a better result.

Well Venezuelan migrants have the option of post modern distopic Narco eastern Europe.

[–] Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com 60 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

Well, that's just a new level of fucked up cruel. Their plan from the start, but certainly not the last.

I'm out of swears at the moment. Care to lend me some?

I really wish somebody would stop him.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's truly a shame how much difference two inches can make

I'm so desparate for a portal into that universe just see it.

Afterwards, I'd jump into the timeline where the fucker lost in 2016. Fuck this shit.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

That's what she said.

[–] NotLemming@lemm.ee 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Self deport or what? The Gulag? For life? Even soviet Russia had show trials and sentences of 10-20 years.

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

If they leave now, they might be able to return under a future non-fascist administrstion.

If they get forcibly removed, they end up in an el salvador concentration camp.

So that's their options. Kinda like a "pick your method of execution" scenario.

[–] NotLemming@lemm.ee 3 points 7 hours ago

The illusion of choice.

[–] NotLemming@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah... Do they even know the names of the people they're sending? Do they start referring to them by a number instead?

Doesnt even seem safe to self-deport. Still gotta to through the customs to get out dont they?

[–] minnow@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Afaik they'd have to go through customs for the country they're trying to enter. I can't recall ever having to deal with US customs when leaving the US, it's always been the country I'm traveling to.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 day ago

It’s still risky. A woman got detained recently because she was denied entry into Canada and forced to return to the US where they arrested her.

[–] GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You have to go through TSA and ICE has broad authority within 200 miles of a port of entry. They absolutely fuck with people while they travel. Never bring anything with you that you don't want stolen. That includes cash.

[–] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Exactly my thought. For the same reason they've been arresting people at the border trying to enter the US instead of just turning them away, I expect they'll arrest anyone they seem "illegal" trying to exit the country: The prison industrial complex.

They're going to get rich off of imprisoning people and forcing them into slave labor and internment camps.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 2 points 18 hours ago

There are better and easier ways for "them" to make money. This is just maliciousness.

[–] datalowe@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Well I mean the article says that they're not even going to wait until the "deadline" for so-called self-deportation before they start arresting people who came in under the immigration program:

"But DHS said it retains the authority to target migrants who arrived under this program before the 30-day period lapses. Officials say those prioritized for arrest will include migrants who have failed to apply for another immigration benefit like asylum or a green card."

So they've overnight given themselves the right to arrest people who the day before had a legal right to live in the US. Basically they seem to think the only legal and human rights that exist are those granted by their god-king or Muskolini, and they don't fear the legacy judicial system.

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 22 hours ago

This is that “when they came for ____” moment when the people of the U.S. need to do something.

Fuck that! If they are going to pull this shit then make THEM have to pay to transport you.

I agree with the sentinment, but in practice its a bad idea.

If they leave now, they might be able to return after the US denazifies in the future.

If they get forcibly removed, they end up in an el salvador concentration camp and might never get out of there.

Its like a "picking your method of execution" scenario.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 18 points 1 day ago (3 children)

...they'll transport you to a black site in El Salvador, tho.
