I always call it pot, which I understand outs me as an old person. But there are so many names for chronic, all over the world. What is your favorite?

Pakalolo. I never actually call it that though because I'm not in Hawaii, and I doubt anyone outside of the state knows it.

Gotta stick with the classics.

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago

Jazz cabbage or the Devil’s lettuce

[–] Uranium_Green@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Devil's lettuce, Mary Jane and "marahuana" (in the Hank Hill voice) are probably my favorites that immediately come to mind

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

sticky icky in hank hill voice is pretty fun

I try to avoid terms that demonize or leads to alluding to war on drugs.

So the only correct term, is cannabis.

I don’t call my kids or my adhd meds meth, speed, amphetamines, etc. so I refuse to acknowledge the same for this medicine.

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I respect that. What about "traditional" names like ganja?

The Sticky Icky

jk that stuff ~~does not exist anymore~~ is rare now. Just this dessicated prepackaged nonsense.

When we were youths, I read the Beatles had a code phrase, something like let's have a laugh(?). Then, a friend and I were laughing a little too much when we saw Joe Walsh's record titled Got Any Gum? That became our code phrase.

Lies! You just need to grow it yourself or make friends with a grower. I live in a legal state and have two great dispensaries in my town, but I still frequent a few local growers more often since it's cheaper and better!

I live in California, am nearly 60. We have hundreds in our cities. You have to use weedmap to make sense of it. We also have major cartel violence issues that have tainted the underground scene. The industrialization of weed has brought us this garbage. It is true, I have visited old friends up in the Bay Area not too long ago, and the real stuff can still be acquired but it is no longer common or easy to acquire. The idea of local growers is really great. It should be a farmer's market commodity. That would be brilliant. But, no, some time back, legal dispensaries in California were forced to package everything. Prior to that, when they were initially launched, they'd weigh out the fresh stuff in front of you and put it in a container that didn't make you want to wring their necks. The packaging alone is an atrocity against the environment.

At some point my lines got crossed between "Beefarino", a fictional food stuff that was fed to a horse in an episode of Seinfeld which led to handsome cab ending levels of equine flatulence, and "reefer". Out loud I think I say "weed" most often, but in my internal monologue I call it "reeferino" well over half the time.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I used to call it kale for a while

[–] Rando@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's an insult to weed man.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sounds like you don’t have an adventurous palate 😁

[–] Rando@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I was juicing kale for a while.. It tasted like bitter stagnant mud.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn’t juice that shit. I love it in salads and soups. The texture makes it.

[–] Zos_Kia@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

In french, the most common name is probably "beu" which is a contraction of "beuher" which is verlan (a type of slang where you reverse the word) for "herbe".

This was distorted in a movie to "beuze" , which was then given the verlan treatment again (this happens often) to "zeb", hence my personal favorite "zebuline". Mind you, that's not a common name that's a personal one I use often.

[–] Alpacalypse@crazypeople.online 5 points 2 weeks ago

Weed, herb, or pot. In order of frequency.

Occasionally the more fun names like devils lettuce and wacky tobacky haha

[–] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

Favorite word is a better question but in common speech I'll generally just say weed.

[–] DozensOfDonner@mander.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

We had Mama Cahuna for a while when I was little, has a fun ring to it imo.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

Not sure of its origin, but it's been called Bubatz in Germany for a couple years now, so I sometimes, mostly jokingly, say Bubatz. My SO and I usually say Bubert because couples speak or Weedle like the Pokemon because 'weed'

[–] CPMSP@midwest.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Herb or flower

[–] Today@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I mostly use cannabis, especially if I'm taking about cbd, cbn, cbg. Often weed if i mean thc.

I like dope because of the ambiguity.

Kush is my most frequent, but jazz cabbage is probably my favorite

[–] tamethecoach@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

when my wife or I asked each other if we want to go out for a smoke, we call it a "poof"

I dated somebody whose family used that as a synonym for farting. So thank you for taking it outside!

[–] Zaraki42@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Pingu or "take a kayak."

[–] 2ugly2live@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Jive Parsley & Cabbage

I call it grass, sometimes dope, lol! Showing my age, too 🙃!

CBD.

Living in a prohibition state it helps make it sound legal.

[–] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Electric lettuce

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Scott Green

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 weeks ago
[–] SmilingSolaris@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago
[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago

Probably jazz cabbage or the Devil's lettuce.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I usually call it "pot," but then multiple people said I sound like an old person, so now I don't know what I'm supposed to say. I guess I'll start calling it "dope."

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah “pot” is the best term

[–] wheeldawg@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

My brother and I use several terms interchangeably. Usually just weed, but medicine and flower, and sometimes herb get used a bit when we feel like changing it up.

Pretty boring selection most of the time.

Oh, almost forgot "stuff". Yeah we're kind of boring lol.
