you no longer have that kind of energy because you have a 5 day work week.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 32 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

Wait, so if I only worked four days a week I'd have the energy to work five days a week?

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I work a four day workweek, but I also work 25% longer every workday than most people do.

I'm grateful for my extra day off, but I'm also tired every workday. And a lot of non workdays.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm pushing my boss for 4 tens right now, if I'm already there what's two more hours? But most of my job is waiting for something to break (maintenance). I want 3 day weekends so badly.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

4 10s is the way to go 100%. A day to rest, a day to play, and a day to get shit done at home.

Only thing better is being self-employed lol. Some days I work 6-8hrs, some days it's like 3hrs and some office stuff, some days I barely do anything. Most days I've got something to do though.

I was a construction electrician tho, every time we got 4 10s some asshole would find a reason to have us there Friday anyway. I mean, sure, overtime. But I'm tired bro.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Electrician here as well, running a shop comes with its own set of shenanigans that I sometimes daydream about just working for someone. But then I remember the flexibility I have that wouldn't be a thing otherwise.

It's worthwhile in my eyes. Most people to whom I mention it say "I couldn't work a ten hour day," which is a valid perspective, but also I'd rather lose two hours a day over one day a week.

I would prefer 4x8 though.

Increase production with this one weird trick. Proletariats hate it.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 68 points 2 months ago (1 children)

"No man should have to work more than 40 hours per week!"

"Yeah, that seems pretty reasonable."

"Women should be able to work for the same wages!"

"Of course. We should all have equal rights."

"20 hours should be the new work week!"

"I don't know, man. Seems pretty leftist. It's not like we nearly doubled employment."

Our grandparents earned enough as single earners to provide for their entire family and own a house.

Now 2 people work and they can barely pay rent on an apartment.

Its not hard to see why the right cries about the good old times, except somehow its the gays, and not the bourgeoisie that they believe are what caused the decline.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 36 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Agreed, and I feel like that's what I'm getting at here. A family of five used to be able to exchange 40 hours of labor with the economy and at least get by. Now it's 80 hours, and we're struggling. The right is suggesting we put our children to work to make up the difference.

I think we're on the same page.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Absolutely, just re-iterating using different words.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

Oh, well, thank you then. Now I'm just envious that I wasn't able to communicate my message as clearly and succinctly. Kudos to you.

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 5 points 2 months ago

Look at the bright side!

At least the bourgeoisie can provide for their ENTIRE family now.

Oh and there are probably more bourgeoisie than back then.

30h/week since 2024, I am never going back.

Instead of working, I am just playing Oblivion Remastered all day today.

[–] bunnyBoy@pawb.social 34 points 2 months ago

I'm so happy for you!

They said through clenched teeth while white knuckeling their desk, waiting to get off work so they can go back to playing Oblivion Remastered

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What do you do, if you don't mind my asking?

[–] lichtmetzger@discuss.tchncs.de 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Web development in North Germany, for a small agency. We mainly work with WordPress and Typo3, which is used by the government, clinics and other "bigger" institutions a lot here.

I actually like PHP (most people seem to hate it :D), so it's a good job.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I've pretty much gotten used to it, whenever I hear about human-friendly working conditions, it's never coming from the USA lol. I still hold out hope.

Happy for you regardless. :)

That's cool, I'm glad for you. Genuinely, I'm hoping someday that I can maneuver myself into a position like yours.

Living should only be for people with a will to live. I really don't.

Honestly as someone under 30 I could accept this. Obviously universal 4 day week would be better, but if this would sell the idea to the boomers it would be worth it.

I'm over 30, I don't want to work anymore, period. But I can't live off what I have or off the land, so to the grinder I go.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Well, I have some bad news for you... it gets worse.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

It doesn't have to! Or so I've heard. But it does seem to.

My terrible idea is that the world move to an 8 day week. Everyone works (at most) 4 days on, 4 days off. School is 4 on, 4 off. Two alternating shifts. Its always the weekend for half of everyone and everything is always open. I guarantee a roomful of smart people will be able to tear this idea to shreds. We could invent cool new names for all the days of the week though.

[–] Deepus@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago

I like that idea, only problem i have is picking who works which days. Like i want days off with my partner but if we are on opposite shifts we wont see each other.

[–] Hjalamanger@feddit.nu 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

4 day work week or 6 hours work day tough?

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why not both ?

6 hours a day, 4 days a week, same pay. My productivity would be unchanged if not increase!

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yeah, I'd put in more effort for sure, but that's also because I'm underpaid by about half right now, so that would even it out.
