Donald Trump has sued Rupert Murdoch and two Wall Street Journal newspaper reporters for libel and slander over claims that he sent sex offender Jeffrey Epstein a bawdy note and sketch of a naked woman.

Trump’s lawsuit on Friday, which also targets Dow Jones and News Corp, was filed in the southern district of Florida federal court in Miami.

It came after the Journal reported on a 50th birthday greeting that Trump allegedly sent to Epstein in 2003 that included a sexually suggestive drawing and reference to secrets they shared. It was reportedly a contribution to a birthday album compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell.

Lmao love it

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 110 points 2 days ago (3 children)

No. Stop. Don't.

Pretty sure this would mean an actual copy of the letter, if it exists, will have to be entered into evidence.

[–] Steve@communick.news 23 points 2 days ago

Only if they don't settle out of court.
I can't imagine trump wants this to go to a court room.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Lol you have much more faith in our justice system than I do.

They can order the publisher to provide it? I don't know but I would think so.

In fact they can but journalists tend to protect their sources so courts don't often challenge them this way. But it happens.

The funniest part of this i find is had the stupid cunt just not became president, he could have avoided all this and spent the rest of his days cheating at golf, but no the fragile little bitch had to go get his feelings hurt by Obama and his ego could just not let it go

[–] sunbytes@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

In all fairness, he's made heaps of cash this time around, and written his name in history.

Which is the most important thing for a narcissist.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 46 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wasn't one of the justifications for giving the President blanket immunity was that his job is too important to have him distracted by a court case?

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 42 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This isn't a court case, it's a shakedown.

It would be genuinely funny if the man who has nearly 3x the reported wealth of Trump, and who also owns the media empire that fueled Trump's political rise, loses here

Although, I wasn't expecting Musk to get spanked so quickly, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about xD

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Depends if Murdoch actually cares about proving the journalistic integrity of the WSJ or appeasing Trump who's FCC could pull broadcasting licenses even if Murdoch wins.

My guess is Murdoch settles and and the WSJ prints a front page retraction.

[–] Almonds@mander.xyz 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think you have an excellent point about the FCC, and if anything that aspect will be an interesting thing to keep an eye on. Because even my grandmother, who is a few years younger than Murdoch, watches Fox on YouTube now

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

FCC doesn't have control over cable shows or Youtube replays.

[–] SheeEttin@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well, maybe not legally.

[–] Almonds@mander.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Yes, that's why I mentioned YouTube, because AFAIK they currently can't dictate what is streamed online.

I'm not sure what the recent Net Neutrality strike means in this regard though. In March of this year the FCC commissioner stated he wanted control over YouTube TV

[–] tal@lemmy.today 36 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I don't think that Trump comes out ahead in any legal battle. Even if he's in the legal right, which I seriously doubt

now you've got a huge, high-profile feud going on with the guy that owns a large chunk of the right wing media out there. I mean, you're gonna lose in the court of public opinion.

And the standard for defamation specifically in US courts specifically for public figures is very high. Like, let's even say that the report was in error (which I also kinda doubt). To win a defamation case in the US, the defamation has to be intentionally false, done with the intent of causing harm, and a collection of other things that are gonna be hard to win on.

And if you lose, now the news headline is "Trump loses/abandons case against News Media X over his involvement in sexy stuff with Epstein".

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago

He doth protest too much. He may not have drawn the picture, but he definitely signed it. Either way, no good because he approved of its message.

[–] Bell@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

Somehow I don't think this will help bury the Epstein story

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Game of chicken. If they don't settle, Trump will pull out before he can be deposed. Of course there is a greater than zero chance that he is so far gone he doesn't actually remember his little love letter.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm shocked he has any children at all (for a variety of reasons) with pull-out game like his. My best guess is that half-pump chump Trump lost his balance at the critical moment of entry and, from those four occasions, life was made. Five occasions, I forgot one but to be fair, so does he.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

from those four occasions

But what about Tiffany

Five occasions, I forgot one but to be fair, so does he.

Well played.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This should be entertaining. I want them to go to discovery. We need Trump describing, under oath, their relationship. Present day Trump

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Yes! Burn all your bridges with your few friends you have left! Then you will be left all alone on an island, a sex island. Oh shit wait!…

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 3 points 1 day ago

Southern District of Florida Federal Court in Miami - is that I-Lean Qannon’s jurisdiction?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It's never going to get to discovery I don't know what y'all are expecting. This is Rupert Murdoch. He's just going to use this as an excuse to give a giant payout to Trump.

[–] oyo@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Exactly, he's using lawsuits as avenues for bribes.

[–] AndrewSB49@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

He's killed that story completely now.
