One academic involved in sensitive research stopped teaching after experiencing harassment from a visiting scholar from China, who whispered β€œwe’re watching you” in one case and interrogated the academic about their personal history at another event.

Gonna say up front I could be wrong but I find this kind of absurd.

Liberal academics are the most spineless people ever. I've been handcuffed and thrown into a police car before when doing things the west didnt like, and that didnt stop me from doing it more. Someone whispers in your ear and you quit your job? Even if this was true. It's pathetic.

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You are only saying this because a sneaky Chinese hasn't snuck up to you and whispered "we are watching you" in your ear just as you were about to blow the lid off the biggest scandal of your life.

Actually, depending on how they say it, i'm almost thinking i might enjoy that experience a bit too much, if you know what i mean...

The way you phrased that reminded me of how british people refer to chinese* takeout as "A chinese" and now im imaging a box of takeout sneaking up on someone and whispering that in their ear.

*It's not actually chinese takeout because its britain so like all food there its basically slop. But thats what they call it.

it's insufferable sometimes how easy it is to scare the shit out of these professional-managerial types. i might do that just to mess with them

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you do, say "they're watching you" instead because it absolves you of involvement.

that's how you get committed

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Yep, that's why I said entertainment!

[–] haui@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Western media is equally pathetic and disgusting. Using animals as a way to post anti china propaganda is off the charts stupid.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes it is, funny in a sad, sick kind of way. That was within a half hour of hitting "regular" Lemmy, this morning. I'm not sure if Western media is getting worse, "regular" Lemmy is getting worse, or if I'm just scrolling with a more skeptical eye. It just smacked me full in the face, first thing and sleepy, this morning.

They're preparibg for war with china so they will likely start dehumanizing campaigns against them.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ramp them up, from my perspective.

[–] haui@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm not following. I dont think dehumanization is a good idea at all. Did I miss something?

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm saying they're not preparing for war with dehumanizing rhetoric, rather they're preparing with escalation. Apologies for ambiguity.

[–] haui@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh! Now I see it. Thanks for clarifying. :)

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

No worries, I was tired and didn't realize how awful it came across until you inquired. I'm really sorry about that.

May everyone have the loveliest of days

BBC finds electrocuted, drowned and starved cats in online torture groups

😾

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yes but they say the trend originated in China. Could be true, could be false.

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm 99% sure it is a CIA recruiting scheme.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure it was false, at least. I'm pretty wiped out after my day and not making the connection. Unless you mean the CIA set up the websites that appear to be Chinese?

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The claim it has a Chinese origin is just asserted with next to no evidence.

They say that they tricked a major ring leader into a video call and he ended up being Japanese. If a major player in the community is a Japanese man why are they insisting it started in China?

Running an online community costs money. The CIA is the most likely to have an interest in keeping a rollodex of psychopaths.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ah yes, thanks for pointing out the obvious in my face. Like recruiting people with learning disabilities or mental health conditions to daesh, then arresting them (which makes me wonder how these cases aren't dismissed as entrapment).

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And imagine having not just a list of psychopaths but also evidence of them doing horrific things to use as black mail. Not that a psychopath that kills kittens isn't going to jump at the chance to hurt people for a CIA pay cheque.

[–] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

It speaks very clearly to the psycopathy of US policy and a cargo shipload of government apparatus people.

[–] 201dberg@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The the equivalent of people making jokes about Chinese food being made from street cats. Meanwhile we have actual videos of Isn'treal and USA soldiers laughing as they throw kittens off a cliff.
