An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

https://dullmensclub.com/

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

Compatible with Windows 8.1
"Blast from the past"

Come on, my guy. Give me a freaking break.

[–] shane@feddit.nl 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Windows 8.1 was released in 2013, so yeah, a blast from the past!

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your reply only further reinforces what I'm saying. 2013 was not that long ago.

[–] adaveinthelife@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Your comment being 1 minute old would also qualify it as a blast from the past.

People out there waging wars over money and power when the real battle lies in semantics.

I hate how all-around scammy this is. Who knows what the hell that thing does when plugged in..

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 57 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It seems it's a fairly cookie cutter program that wastes an awful lot of bytes and CPU cycles on just emptying your recycle bin, removing "internet clutter," (i.e. clearing your cache and temp files), removing broken shortcuts, twiddling your run-on-startup apps, etc., which are all actions that are not only fabulously unlikely to make your Windows machine perform any faster but are also all things you could do yourself in about thirty seconds.

I lifted that screenshot from this video, chosen purely on the merits of this guy's hat.

You can also find plenty of places to download the installer found on the Win Cleaner USB drive (it's just a cheap USB storage stick in a funny shaped housing) and try it yourself... possibly preferably inside a virtual machine.

Ironically, clearing cache will make your Internet browsing slower.

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Nuh-uh, I never visit the same site twice

[–] Michal@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even Google, to google Google?

[–] Klear@quokk.au 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I prefer to go to Bing to google DuckDuckGo.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

So it doesn't even remove unnecessary startup apps? Are you fucking kidding me? What a waste of money.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 9 points 2 days ago

Before you know it you're debugging Snaps.

[–] 6nk06@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago

It most likely does nothing. I'm a bit angry that idiots certainly made a lot of money out of that scam.

[–] laz@pawb.social 57 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Blast from the past? Windows 8.1?

oh.

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

True, though this does seem super dated for Windows 8. This company was releasing early XP shit in 2012+

^also wow windows 8 was released 13 years ago?^

[–] tautalas@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Yeah, same. Thought "oh, it's pretty recent" lol

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 40 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The company is still around. They chose an interesting name for their Mac software. No Linux drive, though. Wonder why

[–] witty_username@feddit.nl 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not sure if real or if I'm gullible

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A witty one like you? No chance

You might be in trouble, though. Luckily for you, I'm selling an app that protects you from scams!

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The MacWeenCleaners, such a shitty clan.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unlimited use on ONE computer for a YEAR!

So what happens with the hardware part after a year? 🤔

It always bothered me that the machine cooks itself but the tape is perfectly fine.

[–] Acamon@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

I genuinely thought this was a joke way of packaging a Linux distro.

[–] lennee@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

love how its unlimited but limited in every way

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Should archive it and see if someone will do a decompile and analysis on it to see what it actually does.

[–] Exusia@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm betting it looks at things that run-on-startup and more to check if theyr'e not system mandatory turns that off second would probably be erasing temp files, since windows notoriously has temp file deletion, and lastly might (heavy might) delete objects like Downloads that you haven't opened for more than a year or so, assuming you simply forgot those

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's probably pretty scammy, but I love the design which is 1:1 that of an actual cleaning product.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It basically just did what CCleaner does. Defrag your HDD and clean up the registry.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

CCleaner defrags only if you install their defrag app (the probably just calls the Microsoft tool on background)

[–] omgboom@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

Go scatter these on the floor at blackhat

My guy, that's not unlimited.

[–] lazylion_ca@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 2 days ago

Did it just increase the mouse pointer speed?

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

win 8, the past i'd rather forget

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Windows 8 was just Windows ME2.

[–] JovialSodium@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm curious what's on it. I'd guess it's just a storage device with an antivirus and some system cleanup utilities. And enforces it's restriction by storing a timestamp of when it was used.

I put in a low effort search trying to find out. Saw a couple of YouTube videos that might say, but not in a position to watch those right now. Also found a reddit thread asking the same question but the comments wouldn't load. Gave up at that point.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you still care, someone in here summarized it. And it’s about as worthless as you’d guess

[–] JovialSodium@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 day ago

Thanks! I gave it a read.
