It’s obv anti-constitutional, why trump bother to do something like this that will never work

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 131 points 3 days ago (6 children)

The article claims the perpetrator was trans. They conveniently left out that they detransitioned and fell into nazi and fascist ideology.

[–] DrFistington@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I figured some inconvenient truths were found about the shooter, which is why no one seems to want to run stories about it

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've seen more stories today about this single ex trans person than all other shooters combined this year.

It's being covered a lot right now.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

The venn diagram of mass shooters is like 95% overlap with nazi ideology and the mass media is like "how about we just cover the 5% that makes conservatives feel upset"

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So guess they should also ban all white cis males from owning guns too? I mesn after all those types have done a lot of school shootings.

'No Way to Prevent This,' Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

Other countries have figured this out. I don’t see why America has to be different.

I’m de facto banned from Florida on account of being trans.

All of a sudden gun control sounds good to the fascists. Very very weird.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 81 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fascists love gun restrictions

[–] nul9o9@lemmy.dbzer0.com 53 points 3 days ago (5 children)

A number of gun restrictions were implemented to disarm minorities in America.

[–] Hayduke@lemmy.world 38 points 3 days ago

Yeah, Black Panthers with firearms was making law enforcement too uneasy.

I have seriously had arguments with conservatives that systemic racism isn’t an issue in this country. If anything, they feel that they are the victims. Pretty wild.

Liberty for me, but not for thee

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

It's always ever been an argument for themselves, white nationalists and fascists, to have the guns, and everyone who isn't them to not have guns.

They only ever argued from a constitutional nature to bend liberals who value law and fairness and it's worked incredibly well.

[–] grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world 95 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Meanwhile, and I note this as a veteran of the Iraq war myself, 28.5% of mass shooters had a military background, but they're not coming after veterans for THEIR guns.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

only 7.4% of americans serve in the military. while i know that's not how statistics work, it seems to be a significant marker. like, i know more than a few former marines who like to talk about luring people onto gold mines because they think then it's somehow legal to murder them.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Can you explain the gold mine "logic"? Ive never heard that one

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

i honestly think they just think if they're underground no one will hear the shot and the legality has something to do with mining law. it's sovcit bullshit.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well you see I impaled them with a flag that has gold frill, so its actually under maritime law and since you arent a boat you cant arrest me, officer. 🤡

I didn't murder them, I unlifed them officer. that's accredited. you're accredited to unlife people in gold mines yes sir. I'm not in trouble a little bit. i'm bona fide.

[–] gdog05@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

From my understanding, gold mines (doesn't even have to be a mine, just a gold claim of any type) have certain legal exemptions for trespassing from the olden days. At least in most areas that I'm aware of. It's basically the Castle Doctrine but can be applied if it seems like another person is even attempting to visit your claim. Not much room for concerns of "what happened?" when the only question that needs answered is "were they there?"

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago

Oh it being antiquated law makes a ton of sense for the sov cit idiocy

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago

Or, you know, white disenfranchised boys? Not that they are all killers, but most mass shooters do come from that group

[–] Know_not_Scotty_does@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well yeah, they have guns and know how to use them.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Also the army can be sort of traumatizing for some reason. And the healthcare when they get back isn't . . great.

I'm sure the 2nd amendment folks are making a big fuss about this, right? Right?!

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 40 points 3 days ago (4 children)

If you're trans, this is your signal to buy a gun ASAP.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I taught self defense to families for many years, I always encouraged learning about and owning firearms as first-line items of defense because all the eye-gouging and groin-kicks in the world won't help if someone enters your home with a gun.

I am not a gun-nut. I believe we need stricter laws and required training to own the things, but that isn't going to happen so the least you can do is make sure you're not the one without a force multiplier.

I have recently been telling trans people very bluntly and directly that they need to arm up. I get a lot of pushback, a lot of it is very "online" in nature and performative, and a lot of trans girls have a hard time reconciling it with their ideas of femininity, but I am telling you all now, they may come for you. You are literally in danger in the USA. Maybe not now, but very possibly in the near future.

The only thing that will keep a fascist administration from going door-to-door to black-bag undesirables is if every home visit is a potential stand-off and bloodbath. Yes, it may come to that. It's sad and shitty that they have put you in this position, but you have to become part of the meat-grinder, not a name that disappears off lists and census surveys.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Please, please, please keep saying this to anyone who will listen.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago (4 children)

At a gun show or other private seller.

[–] Fondots@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I really hate the term gun show loophole

Maybe the situation and laws are different in other parts of the country, but at every gun show I've ever been to all of those people with stands set up selling guns are dealers, so to buy a gun through them you have to go through all the legal hoops as if you were buying from a regular gun store.

I suppose there's a lot of randos wandering around there who own guns who might be convinced to do a private sale, but that doesn't really have anything to do with them being at a gun show except it's a convenient networking opportunity. You could just as easily hang around outside of a shooting range trying to find a private seller.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yep. Never seen a private transfer at a gun show. LOL, I would never try to buy a gun at one! Everything is overpriced and the background check always seem to take forever.

I’m conflicted about this advice.

If we do end up in a civil war scenario, it’s important that gun ownership is not severely lopsided against vulnerable groups.

But in the meantime, gun ownership is a massive risk factor for suicide (attempts and fatalities), and trans folks are at a higher risk in the first place.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 5 points 3 days ago

I do agree that suicide is a risk, and that guns increase the risk by making it very easy, 100%. I'm not gunna choose a side for you either, it's a hard one.

I do want to note two things though. It doesn't need to be a full blown civil war for them to start abusing and arresting trans people, and many trans suicides are caused by transphobia, both from other citizens and from government policy.

Blacks, women and LGBT have been the largest gun buying demographic since Trump 1.0.

[–] West_of_West@piefed.social 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Where's NRA? Is this not an erosion of what they are fighting for?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Sure, Putin's slush fund is going to argue with Putin's puppet. HA

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

That’s what happens before they get disappeared

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 34 points 3 days ago

Right. Because trans people have equal rights, just not quite as equal as others. Maybe like 3/5 equal. And you need that extra 2/5 to be covered under the Bill of Rights.

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You can tell the GOP's role model is Hitler with all the plans they have.

You can't have a good fascist country without minority groups to oppress and blame everything on. Especially when republicans are responsible for most of the crimes the administration complains about.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 10 points 3 days ago

It's likely Hitler's role models were the white supremacists of America. The Heritage Foundation has roots that trace back much further than Hitler and Nazi Germany, and Hitler himself had material regarding the effectiveness of Jim Crow laws.

The Heritage Foundation also clearly has applied lessons learned from Nazi Germany - outright executions are going to get you lots of resistance, where as disease, policy driven famine, and political violence can kill a large number without ever becoming too unpopular. Interestingly, this may be the reason they push so hard for controlling all media and social media platforms.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

The GOP really don’t want their fellow chasers to get popped in self-defense when the trans panic sets in.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

meanwhile a shooting is likely happening right now by cis white male shooter #408

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

Told you all over and over to arm up before it's too late, hope at least some of you listened and not everyone was reflexively, performatively aghast at the idea of owning a tool of death.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Is that cognitive dissonance I smell?

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Cool. Please waste your time with this. It won’t succeed and it will take away from other damaging things they can do.
