Yes but from what I've heard, he's the local red-pilled nutjob that is already known to local police which is why they were totally confused by Patel going on live TV and announcing they "had the shooter in custody" after he was initially arrested after the shooting.

Are you talking about them looking through his phone? Because I don't think anyone is under the illusion that they can't do that when you confess to murdering someone.
They can't compel you to give up your phone's password or pattern, but they can compel you to open it with biometrics.
Why would they need to do that when backdoors are mandated by law, if it's a US company doing business compelled by US law?
Are they? I know that unlocking a phone and bypassing encryption are different, but I hadn’t heard this before.
