That's hilarious. Where did you hear that part of the story?

Seeing only the thumbnail at first I was sure that lynchpin piece was going to be "the plot of babylon 5"

I think that's how human brains be. We're already notoriously bad at correctly accounting for low-risk events (eg the lottery). Plus being constantly aware of the full myriad of threats we face would probably be debilitating.

If you haven't had or seen a kind of accident your brain probably sees no compelling reason to account for it. My partner was lax about flu shots until she started working at a funeral home and saw how many people of all ages die of the flu. Now it's a threat she has the awareness to accurately account for.

All republicans are asking media companies to do is to promote their hate speech and censor and name anyone who disagrees with them. Just normal, sensible media policy that any fascist regime would implement.

In my experience the world dividing the world into givers and takers is very unhealthy and just not accurate. Most of my close people both need and provide support in varying amounts over time.

I had two friends who were in a choir and they would rickroll people live at parties - sneak up behind people and start singing the entire song.

EEG studies have shown that power changes the brain, suppressing empathy and making you less capable of considering the pain of others.

The statement that "power corrupts" is will always be true, it's literally how our brains work. The powerful will always be more evil than the rest of us.

Here are some sources:

"Recent evidence has demonstrated that empathic responses are modulated by social power." "high-power people show low empathic accuracy compared to low-power people" "numerous studies have shown that people with high power are less accurate in recognizing others’ emotional expressions"

"higher socioeconomic status is associated with reduced neural responses to the pain of others" "experiments using fMRI indicates that power promotes greed ... displayed decreased response in the right and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, indicating a weaker restrain of self-interest when processing receiving more than others" "Power decreases empathic concern" "powerholders may experience less distress and less compassion as well as exhibit greater autonomic emotion regulation when faced with the pain of others" "elevated power impedes accurate understanding of other people’s emotional expressions" "Elevated power is associated with heightened interest in rewards while low power is associated with increased attention to the interest of others"

"In face-to-face conversations, participants disclosed experiences that had caused them suffering. As predicted, participants with a higher sense of power experienced less distress and less compassion and exhibited greater autonomic emotion regulation when confronted with another participant's suffering."

My dad has always described the US as the land of bilk and money.

Since I moved here ~a decade ago, I've been constantly shocked at the background level of cheating others that goes on. I definitely agree that it's worse now, but we've been a nation of two-bit grifters since we've been a nation.

What an absolutely brain dead idiot. It's an atoll, not an island.

There's also no real indication that it was a drug boat or that any of the people we killed were working for a cartel. Best case scenario is we murdered some fishermen who get pressured into working for a local cartel every now and again. More likely, we just murdered some fishermen.

'Nazi mouths off at event' is always a distraction.

What's this? The homophobic incel neo-nazi who streamed his gay porn and then claimed it was mossad is denying something?

Chinuk Wawa, also called Chinook Trade Jargon, is an incredibly simple language with like ~1000 words and basically no grammar. It's a pidgin of several native languages with some english and french influence.

The language was spoken by settler and native alike, until the railroad arrived and English overwhelmed it.

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde built a very nice app to help learn this very important part of our region's heritage.
