Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

Great yet ?

I do feel sorry for individual Americans who will lose their jobs, maybe their homes, maybe more. However, we saw what Russia has done to the Ukraine and we have to be just as wary about our Southern neighbour. We've always known that America is a good-weather friend and we can't count on them, even if they have always been able to count on us, but with Trump we have to believe that America would go even further and try to destroy us. We can't sit back and take that. Until Trump and his acolytes are out of power in the US - and that may never happen - we have to Stand On Guard for Thee (Canada). That means as little US vacation and as limited buying of US merchandise as we can individually manage.

I'm American, and I don't feel bad for them

If she wants tourism, she must make a promise: that ICE will be arrested on sight, and that the Nevada State Guard will stand strong against any National Guard unit that is enforcing totalitarianism.

I only visited Vegas once, for a symposium. I do not understand the appeal of a city were parents walk around drunk all day pushing strollers, or placards advertising hookers, or gambling in games that clearly state on them you will lose.

It's a shithole within a shithole.

Nevada is a solidly red state but Vegas (like basically all cities outside of Texas and Florida...) heavily favors Democrats. So I don't think this is a "leopards ate my face" situation.

But... yeah. That is the problem. A lot of cities are actively fighting back (not aware of Vegas doing so). But you still need to get to that city. And if I were fortunate enough to not live in this hell country, there would be nothing you could do to make me risk border control.

I thought that too, until I read this comment. So nah, it's a leopards eating faces situation.

Yeeeeeah, that's wrong. Harris won Clark county by about 2%. They favored Democrats but calling it "heavily favored" is really stretching it.

I’m born and raised in Nevada north eastern Nevada to be exact and seeing this state and Vegas solely descend into the cesspit that it has created I couldn’t be happier. It does suck for the workers in the hotels and the people that drive taxis and work in food services throughout state they are going to be the first ones to suffer from this.

Get rid of the Führer and his Neo-Nazi party and their American GeStaPo, and tourists might return. Dead simple solution, isn't it?

The biggest industry outside of wall street built to fleece people of their money is hurting? Cry me a river.

From what I've been reading here, sounds a lot that they activelly brought in multiple leopards: an anti-foreigner out of control Fascist regime and very high prices.

That's like commiting suicide with both barrels of a two barrel shotgun.

Well, I suppose if they could appeal to anyone to enter the states right now, it would be people who 'enjoy' big risk gambling...

I was there in August, and it was dead. 2am and the whole block was me and a depressed looking prostitute walking by. Ten years ago I’d be in a crowd avoiding pickpockets, but nothing.

Surprising number of Hispanic tourists, so very curious if ICE hits Vegas soon.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

Just hold on a bit longer. Trump is desperately trying to turn his shit deals into art.

[–] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Taking a step away from the reasons this is happening, perhaps it's not a good idea to have a place that's so dependent on tourism money. Cities should be city first, travel destination second.
