Hey in addition to that other comment with the question.

Not happening as I went into the "order" part and it's closer to $2000.

It's not the worst thing in the world.

Mate I have a question. There's a deal on at the moment for Starlink. It would make sense given my current situation. I have a question for you. I'm thinking that I could rig up the modem in a box on my power pole at the edge of my block at the street. Could I contain that in a metal box or PVC box and still get a signal ?

You seem to be in the know about these things. Thought I'd ask you first to see if you have any ideas about this. Cheers.

I'm not too sure about the specific thing you're asking, but I can have a crack at explaining what you'll need.

The first thing you'll need is a Starlink kit. This has the satellite, power supply, and a wireless router. The exact one you buy is up to you, but the "Standard Kit" should see you covered.

This hardware cost is unavoidable, but currently looks to be on special for $149 via Starlink.

The next thing you need is a Starlink subscription. Depending on your location you may need a "roam" plan because they claim there's not enough capacity for a fixed address. The roam plans will work everywhere, but you get less speed (de-prioritised traffic) and more expensive plans.

If it claims no coverage, try using a suburb either side of you - for example the closest mainland address you can find. If it works there, it'll work on the island. You'll just have to get it delivered to an address they're happy to service, so get it sent to a mates house or work or whatever.

Installation is easy and the Starlink app talks you through it. Basically point satellite at sky, connect cables (which only plug in one way, literally can't fuck it up), turn on power. The Starlink app will connect and show you which way the dish should be angled etc.

That's about it. If you just want internet you're ready to go. The Starlink router will do what you want, and has wireless with a decent enough range.

You should be able to install the dish on top of your shipping container, and run the lead through a hole to inside and have the router inside and secure. Depends if you have power in there I guess. Can always just put it in a distribution board type box with a lock on it if you only have power at your property boundary or whatever.

Also you can "suspend" the service for $8/month which gives unlimited super slow speed. I'm currently on "Residential Lite" which is $99/month for unlimited data (but low priority so it can apparently be slow at night - I'm using it as a backup connection at work so I don't care about nighttime speeds) because I was having issues with our main NBN line... But am about to swap to the $8/month standby just to keep it ticking over. You can instantly boost it back up so if it 8 NBN goes out again I can just do a month of upgrade and be back online fully within about 5 minutes.

That is something that I'm not willing to divulge at this moment.

Well, it's a lovely, curiosity piquing picture. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks. I bought a block of land. It has stunning views. I'm very very lucky to have scored it. The container was on it and I have paid the owner, a friend extra for it.

It's half her stuff and half my stuff.

I'll be delivering her stuff to her soon.

If you really really want to know what's in it I'm happy to tell. I mean there's a 300 year old Scottish sofa and chair in there. No heads tho.....

I admit to curiosity, but mostly I just wanted to reference the meme. The furniture sounds amazing though! Thank you for the information.

I've been wanting to acquire a shipping container, but I don't really have a need for one, so I haven't been able to convince the wife; also, I'd prefer it to be somewhere towards the back of my property, but the property is heavily hilled and heavily wooded, so I think the only plausible options for getting it somewhere back there would be to cut down a bunch of trees or, I don't know ... Hire some kind of cargo elevator? And that would probably cost more than the container itself. If I ever do decide to seriously pursue some kind of outbuilding, it will almost certainly make more sense to build one.

Thanks again for following up!

No worries. And yes, build something. Shipping containers are overrated. I currently own three.....lol. A neighbour built a container home, when I mentioned a desire to do the same she firmly said "don't".

Now the first container that I bought has a small side window, and brackets on top to facilitate some kind of roof. Good for a bit of insulation. ( Well a barrier of sorts from the sun ) They really do cook. It has a small side roller door too. I reckon I will keep that one after I finish building a house here. It cost me $2000 so not bad at all.

The one in the pic, well the previous owner wanted $3600. I paid $1000 for it because they're simply not worth a lot.

I've watched a lot of YT vids about container homes, and in the same vein as your comment, it seems that we might as well just build a new thing.

Cheers.

Oh and if you want the furniture, there's another single chair available and you can have it all. Probably for free.

I'm on Russell Island though so a bit of a chore.

Hey, that's very kind. I live in the North Eastern United States, so it's probably not really doable. Before you sell or give them away, make sure to take a picture, though - there are several communities I'm sure would be interested.

Oh lol. Well bloody come and get them you lazy bugger.......

Ok so why do we find you here ? I mean it's great.

I've been to NY twice. Been up those Twin Trade towers twice. NY blew me away. I'm English, going to America was a big big deal and fascinating.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Ahhh, that's a fair question. I've pretty much left my feed settings to what they were the day I signed up, other than blocking instances / communities that exclusively use languages I don't know. I guess that means I see Australian, New Zealand..ian, Canadian and other instances, since they all at least partially use the one language I know. I honestly didn't notice you were from an Australian instance until you mentioned it.

I block the ones with which I can't communicate because neither of us is likely to be useful to each other any time soon, but I still want to have some awareness of the world. I'll probably never be in Australia, but I can learn a bit about its politicians, climate and people. Also, I can learn what other countries are saying about America (though I admit I rarely enjoy reading it). Besides that, from what I've seen here and elsewhere, it's a beautiful country if you respect nature. If I had blocked this instance, I wouldn't have seen your lovely block (another thing I might learn - I'm not familiar with that word in this context) nor your interesting box. Or maybe I misunderstood federation.

I'm glad you got to come to NY and enjoyed your stay! I love NY, too, but I've only been to NYC once and that was ... I think three years after the twin towers were gone. I did once see a salvaged piece of their foundation in Baltimore, though, IIRC.
