It's a little sad that we need to actually say this, but:

Don't be an asshole or you will be permanently banned.

Respectful debate is totally OK, criticizing a product is fine, but being verbally abusive will not be tolerated.

Focus on discussing the idea, not attacking the person.

I find it much more enjoyable than jogging. Also, easier on my leg joints.

Running on pavement isn't a part of evolution's desires.

The curse of aging

I realised cycling is one of the very common midlife crisis hobby, i'm nearing midlife and i pick up cycling lol.

It doesn't require a lot of dexterity and twitch reflexes. At the same time it's very good for your overall health. And it's something you can just do without much preparation or special facilities. You swing your leg over and off you go. And yes, I'm old.

I picked archery. But I cycle to the range.

Whatever works for you, fellow geezer.

Easy on knees, great for cardio, good for lower body strength.

Sport cars and motorcycles got too expensive, I guess?

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

Around here the geezers on bikes are spending motorcycle money in them. $5000 minimum.

Definitely true to life.

That said, I'm not a big fan of this humor: making fun of people who maintain an active lifestyle despite struggling with weight issues? At least they're trying!

And yes, I'm in this picture, although I don't dress up for the Giro d'Italia when riding my bike. It's just my main mode of transportation during most of the year.

I dunno. I see it as showing that men have insecurities about their bodies too.

And how things on social media can be very deceiving.

Fair points.

Aww come on man. Right after the positive message about avoiding fatphobia, you gotta spread that anti-cycling-as-sport bs? Nobody ever makes fun of soccer players for not wearing a suit and tie, or someone out for a casual jog for not wearing cargo shorts and sandals. Why do people, even other cyclists, make fun of people wearing the gear designed to be ideal for cycling while…out cycling?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

What a dumb comment. Proper equipment is very important for pretty much any sport and very much so for cycling. If you've ever been on a ride for more than an hour you'll understand exactly what those are for.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The only "proper equipment" you need for a bike ride is the bike. Everything else is matter of preference.

I ride year around wearing hiking gear along with combat boots, mechanix padded gloves and a 10kg backpack. It might not be optimal for time trials but I also don't want to be stranded in the middle of the forest wearing spandex or without tools incase of a mechanical failure.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So you're saying I should be equipped for a multi day trip in the wilderness when I go on my two hour evening round?

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

"So you're saying.." is such a meme that I can't believe you're actually using it unironically.

No, that strawman is not even remotely what I'm saying.

[–] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Buddy, going to the grocery store isn't a sport, and nobody needs to wear spandex to do it. If you do sports on your bike that's great, but other people don't have to.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I was in no way implying that anyone should wear spandex. I'm just saying it's dumb to make fun of people who do.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

I am in this picture and I don't like it.
