They aren't actually plastic though... They're made of starch, as a biodegradable alternative to plastic.

Essentially, they're Cheetos

Cheetos are mostly air, theres a lot more surface area for microbes. Thoothpicks need to be dense to be strong enough to function. I wouldn't put my money on that.
