A bit late, but this is a good interview.

Besides being a fucking ugly graph where you can barely read the node labels, I also like that this one pretty much admits democrats are clustered along the other reactionaries.

They also don't describe how they even got that clustering (or the network itself) in the first place. I think it's safe to assume they either nicked it from the web or got an inexperienced intern to just do whatever with a Jupyter notebook.

Is it a network of "common posters"? Of links in sidebar? In cross-posts?

Data science is what happens when "programmers think they are experts in everything that deals with computers" is taken to its most extreme. This field needs a purge, for the sake of all actual statisticians.

Science is when you never show your methodology, because it came to you in ~~a dream~~ a linear regression.

Edit: why the heck is Anarcho_Capitalism plotted between Feminism, feminisms and Radical_Feminism?

If you want a horror story, read this other article about his confinement:

He has not been outdoors—apart from a minute when police dragged him into a paddy wagon—since he took refuge in London’s cramped Ecuadorian Embassy in June 2012. The embassy’s French windows had afforded glimpses of sky. Here at Belmarsh maximum security prison in southeast London, his abode since April 11, 2019, he has not seen the sun. Warders confine him to a cell for 23 out of every 24 hours. His single hour of recreation takes place within four walls, under supervision. His paleness is best described as deathly.

source. Some of the usual anti-communist historical lies in the text, but surprisingly lucid WP.

I wonder if he'll double down on the "it's just a joke", like

It was just a prank to make y'all think I have child porn on my PC

It was just a prank that I got arrested for having child porn on my PC

It'll be one of the few times I'll thank cops for their good work.

Great article to revisit throughout the year if you care about game developers over game stock.

Most folks didn’t expect 2024 to be much better, but I’m not sure anyone was ready for it to be possibly worse—yet this year has kicked off with a string of big and small layoffs signaling that the corporate bloodletting rituals aren’t ending anytime soon. So Kotaku is going to try and track all of 2024’s layoffs as they happen. Hopefully, we don’t have to update this post that much.

Recently had a friendly discussions regarding whether it was useful for Brazilian parties to buy into the (settler) notion of a "Brazilian Nation", but from a leftist lens.

Being from a peripheral region, I tend to disagree with this perspective, but I couldn't properly articulate whether it'd at least be an useful tool or not. He also didn't seem very theoretically advanced, basing his perspective on the (kinda racist) notion of regional "underdevelopment" rather than "dependent capitalism".

Since the text is from even before the Revolution, I wonder if there are other interesting texts building on Stalin's perspective or critiquing it fairly from a Marxist position.

Anybody know some?

Edit: elaborating some more, Stalin defines a nation as requiring a common language, territory, and economic integration.

To me, in Brazil all of those three feel like technicalities, as

  • the Portuguese language in Brazil is incredibly diverse throughout the country (specially due to various indigenous and African influences);
  • the territory is very vast and mostly disconnected regarding population centres (for example, there's no rail between even the litoranean capitals, and only a couple roads for the Amazon capitals);
  • and the economy is structured around an industrial centre in the southern regions, and mostly extractive economies everywhere else (that either export to the southern regions or to foreign countries).
    • This means that the regions aren't "underdeveloped", just that they're developed around extracting value for either the global imperial core or the national industrial core.

Never have revolutionary conditions in Haiti been so favorable.

[...] To make matters worse, there is a good chance that Guy Philippe, the former “rebel” leader and senator-elect who just spent seven years in U.S. jails, will finally arrive in Port-au-Prince this week, perhaps as early as Jan. 31. Since his repatriation to Haiti in November, Philippe has been calling for revolution, organizing a militia, exhorting Haitians in rallies around the country and on social media platforms to rise up against “the system” and oust Ariel Henry, and to fight against “imperialism” and the MSS’s deployment. In response, a growing number of demonstrations, strikes, barricades, and civil disobedience actions have gripped Haiti.

Let's see if he maintains his public positions so far regarding the interference of foreign embassies.

Seems everybody is getting involved, and Kenyan police have been delayed. Even if it doesn't end up being a socialist revolution, this is still great news.

Online games will now be banned from giving players rewards if they log in every day, if they spend on the game for the first time or if they spend several times on the game consecutively. All are common incentive mechanisms in online games.

As a person who is very prone to game addiction, to the point where I refuse to play online games, this is a very welcome change. Hope the pressure impacts companies abroad.

I'm surprised people here are still surprised at China taking a """middle-ground""" stance on geopolitical issues that don't directly impact them.

A huge part of their foreign policy since the 90s has been a philosophy of "don't stir the hornets nest" and even though that seems to be changing now that they've become an economic superpower, they stil don't intervene too much where they don't need to. Ignoring whether it's moral or not, it's rooted in pragmatism for their own survival first.

One particular thing about the Yankee "love" for indigenous people is that they effectively believe that indigenous people are dead or aren't part of their country any more. That means they can go on and on about how much they care about indigenous history, say they want to protect indigenous landmarks but don't ever talk about the currently living indigenous people fighting for their land and rights, or their many imprisoned comrades. This is true for other American settler states too.

This is why they'll post black and white pictures of long dead leaders (challenge: have them name those leaders and their nations), but if you ask them about AIM or even living leaders like Peltier they'll think you're making things up. If Israel manages to somehow stablish themselves in the Middle-East to the level the the US did in North America (highly doubtful), they'll celebrate "Palestinian Peoples' Day" the exact same way.

I'm quoting again:

The new draft law on the mobilization of workers is intended to "ensure the functioning of the national economy under martial law", in the words of those drafting the law. It is noteworthy that in early August, Ukraine began to talk about a likely ban against military conscripts leaving the country for three years following an eventual end to military hostilities and martial law. Just such a proposal was recently made by Vadym Denysenko [...], head of the Ukrainian Institute for the Future and a former advisor to the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs. Denysenko said, "I am sure that even after the war it will be necessary to extend the ban on men traveling abroad for at least another three years. Otherwise, we simply will not survive as a nation."

Please illuminate me in your wisdom, how banning people from leaving while conscripting them to either fight in the front or forced labour is not a form slavery. Whose lives are being saved by arresting people trying to flee the country?

Film workers will get better working conditions, and we won't have more buzz about Marvel movies. It's a win-win.

Also a good amount of productions were already halted due to the WGA strike that has been ongoing for 70 days. Unionize, y'all!

Given that the actors' guild will probably start their own strike tomorrow, I think they might get a good bump in solidarity soon. Holywood corporations are willing to just let their workers starve rather than cede to their breadcrumb demands. This is no longer about "pay raise too high", it's about control because they know a victory here means momentum for the workers.

Even if you can't contribute to the Entertainment Community Fund (you likely can't), if you know people who like movies, series and stuff like that, you should probably remember them that this is going on. The media blackout on it is ridiculous.
