Taiga's a Japanese name, though uncommon

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Using flat terrain to facilitate fast movement and colonization. I sure hope no one invents a way to kill me while I descend on your village

🎶 One of these things is not like the others 🎶

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 14 points 10 months ago

I guess cause when the name was made, a good place for a battle was a big ole field. (Speculation)

[–] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago

Yeah, what the fuck?

A plain is mostly grasses. Meadows, fields, and battlefields have flowers.

And love can bloom on them.

I know a kid named River 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I do as well. She's a real badass too

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And she can kill you with her brain.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We're possibly talking about different people, unless the River I know has latent superpowers that I'm unaware of.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 16 points 10 months ago

I'm thinking of River Tam, from Firefly.

Whether she can or can't do that is still debatable, but she did tell Jayne she could. And she can read minds, so it's not entirely out of the question...

Sierra is not an uncommon name, River as well. Probably more.

Xeric Shrubland is definitely a LOTR character.

[–] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Xeric as a name actually sounds kinda badass

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 21 points 10 months ago

If I ever see it as a name I'm just going to assume it's someone who was named Eric by his parents and had it changed to be edgier when he was fourteen

Taiga is a nice name too

What about For(r)est Gump?

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 21 points 10 months ago

Does Forest not count? Gump is sad.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

Theorycrafting this - Tundra would be a nice name. So would Mesa, Fen, and Delta.

Sitting behind these hairdos in class and at the theater definitely sucked back in the 80's.

In Spanish, Selva (rainforest) is a somewhat common girl's name

[–] shai_hulud@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago

I'm going to change my name to Peat Bog

[–] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 16 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Tangent but.. Wow it didn’t even occur to me that paludariums were so named because that’s the type of ecosystem they are mimicking, rather than some guy named Paul invented a cool-style terrarium/aquarium merger.. (example below)

TIL!

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Not biomes but ...

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname tho.

South wetlands is reserved only for the exceptionally hot individuals.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 7 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname

Is it though?

[–] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 8 points 10 months ago

Accepted by half of the two individuals involved

Well, Tundra is already in use. Forest is more common than you know. Arid would work if it didn't mean what it does.

Xeric Shrubland is going to Google his name in 16 years and dedicate his life to hunting you down.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago

Taiga became popular in 2022. Definitely looking forward to seeing that one around. So many Ice Queen jokes.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 10 points 10 months ago
[–] bizarroland@fedia.io 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Xeric sounds kind of like a cool name to give a kid if you want that kid to suffer for their entire life.

But then again they could rise above it and become a cool person, maybe not quite on the level of Streetlamp leMoose but close.

[–] Votes@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago

They'd be pretty popular with the Runescape crowd, for whatever that's worth.

[–] Voyajer@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

I bet you could find someone named chaparral.

Also I'm sure there's a scrub joke to be had here.

[–] HarbingerOfTomb@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

I wanted to name a daughter Tundra.

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 6 points 10 months ago

Ephemeral Pond IIII. I am named after my great grandfather.
