Taiga became popular in 2022. Definitely looking forward to seeing that one around. So many Ice Queen jokes.

[-] steel_nomad@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

And even then, only to a female! Certainly not a male name.

[-] psmgx@lemmy.world 14 points 8 hours ago

Marsha Marsha Marsha

[-] kerrigan778@lemmy.world 30 points 13 hours ago

Sierra is not an uncommon name, River as well. Probably more.

I see what you did there.

[-] Mothra@mander.xyz 12 points 11 hours ago

In Spanish, Selva (rainforest) is a somewhat common girl's name

[-] anarchrist@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 16 hours ago

What are you doing steppe nomad?

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 6 points 13 hours ago

Using flat terrain to facilitate fast movement and colonization. I sure hope no one invents a way to kill me while I descend on your village

[-] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 14 points 13 hours ago

Well, Tundra is already in use. Forest is more common than you know. Arid would work if it didn't mean what it does.

For 2023, the number of births with name River is 3084, which represents 0.168 percent of total male births in 2023.

Tundra is not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth beginning with 2020. Please enter another name.

Was looking them up at https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi but now "This website is temporarily unavailable," did everyone have the same idea and it's only resourced for 1qps?

Taiga's a Japanese name, though uncommon

[-] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 12 points 13 hours ago

Not biomes but ...

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname tho.

South wetlands is reserved only for the exceptionally hot individuals.

[-] Venator@lemmy.nz 4 points 11 hours ago

Cesspool is an acceptable nickname

Is it though?

[-] nailbar@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 hours ago

Accepted by half of the two individuals involved

[-] GBU_28@lemm.ee 13 points 16 hours ago

I guess cause when the name was made, a good place for a battle was a big ole field. (Speculation)

[-] moody 3 points 14 hours ago

Love is a battlefield

[-] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 6 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, what the fuck?

A plain is mostly grasses. Meadows, fields, and battlefields have flowers.

And love can bloom on them.

Tangent but.. Wow it didn’t even occur to me that paludariums were so named because that’s the type of ecosystem they are mimicking, rather than some guy named Paul invented a cool-style terrarium/aquarium merger.. (example below)

TIL!

[-] SacredHeartAttack@lemmy.world 39 points 18 hours ago

I know a kid named River 🤷🏻‍♂️

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 15 points 16 hours ago

I do as well. She's a real badass too

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 14 points 16 hours ago

And she can kill you with her brain.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

We're possibly talking about different people, unless the River I know has latent superpowers that I'm unaware of.

[-] SARGE@startrek.website 15 points 15 hours ago

I'm thinking of River Tam, from Firefly.

Whether she can or can't do that is still debatable, but she did tell Jayne she could. And she can read minds, so it's not entirely out of the question...

Does Forest not count? Gump is sad.

[-] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 27 points 18 hours ago

Taiga is a nice name too

[-] will_a113@lemmy.ml 30 points 19 hours ago

Xeric Shrubland is definitely a LOTR character.

[-] salvaria@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 18 hours ago

Xeric as a name actually sounds kinda badass

[-] Skua@kbin.earth 17 points 18 hours ago

If I ever see it as a name I'm just going to assume it's someone who was named Eric by his parents and had it changed to be edgier when he was fourteen

[-] Freefall@lemmy.world 10 points 15 hours ago

Xeric Shrubland is going to Google his name in 16 years and dedicate his life to hunting you down.

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 22 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

What about For(r)est Gump?

[-] mrmacduggan@lemmy.ml 17 points 18 hours ago

Theorycrafting this - Tundra would be a nice name. So would Mesa, Fen, and Delta.

Sitting behind these hairdos in class and at the theater definitely sucked back in the 80's.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I still don't know how open flames for cigarettes and big hair co-existed.

[-] shai_hulud@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago

I'm going to change my name to Peat Bog

[-] Hupf@feddit.org 10 points 16 hours ago
[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 11 points 18 hours ago

If I have a daughter, I'll name her Swamp Thing.

Xeric sounds kind of like a cool name to give a kid if you want that kid to suffer for their entire life.

But then again they could rise above it and become a cool person, maybe not quite on the level of Streetlamp leMoose but close.
