Summary

UnitedHealthcare has appointed Tim Noel as CEO, following the December 4 killing of former chief Brian Thompson in Manhattan.

Noel, a company veteran, takes charge as public anger grows over U.S. healthcare costs.

Thompson’s death sparked debates on the industry and led to a five-day manhunt.

Suspect Luigi Mangione, arrested in Pennsylvania, faces 11 state charges, including terrorism-related murder, and federal charges that could result in the death penalty.

Jobs I wouldn't take for any amount of money.

because you have more than a modicum of humanity inside you. ❤️

Well yes, but even if not I also don't want to have to look over my shoulder everywhere I go.

They are going to hire private security, with their endless profits.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

That's a crazy choice in my opinion. Brian Thompson made what, 10 million a year? They could pay me 1/4 of his salary and I'd do everything I could to destroy the company until I got fired. I'd get AT LEAST one paycheck which would be a life-changing amount of money for the majority of the country.

If you were hired as a CEO and you were paid tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, you would have the financial means to help a lot of people. You could buy apartment complexes and lower the rent. You could open up homeless shelters. You could start a food pantry. You could buy medical debt and write it off. You could pay for legal funds to help domestic abuse victims.

The problem with people making millions or billions a year is that they don't use their wealth to help others.

Of all the times companies hire from outside the company, this would have been an appropriate one. Instead, let's go with someone who comfortably knows the system and won't rock the boat. Heck, if an outsider were hired with a "it's time to make some changes" message, at least PR could have something to spin.

Interesting name.

I hope that his life insurance company is better at paying out than United is.

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago

I hope his premium skyrockets over increased risk

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And what percentage of premiums will be going directly in his pocket?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago

I’m surprised anyone’s willing to take that role.

[–] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I hope he negotiated 24/7 armed guard as part of his contract...

[–] als@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Now why would you hope that?

[–] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I should have said "I hope for him". Personally I don't give a rat's ass.

I mean I don't wish bad things to happen to anybody, but chances are, if this Brian Thompson replacement got the job, it's probably not because he's a charitable man who's desperate to do right by UHC's patrons. So if he gets whacked - and he clearly has a giant target on his back - I might not weep at his funeral.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

You're going to have to do more than wish bad things on one individual before this is all over. That's an archaic sentiment in these times.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I hope he negotiated 24/7 armed guard as part of his contract...

Szeth-son-son-Vallano will have some thoughts about that. He will be able to blame the CEO for their deaths.

(Please note, FBI, this is a reference to The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, and should in no way be interpreted as a threat of Luigi-ing.)

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 6 points 2 months ago

I'd like to know how many more dollars he got for taking this job, dollars coming from the people, not the revenue...
But if something happens to him too ( I hope not), things will go south soooo deep

Yeah I misread that too
