Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Summary

Donald Trump has ordered a freeze on domestic and foreign federal aid to align funding with his conservative agenda.

A memo from the Office of Management and Budget instructed federal agencies to pause aid related to foreign assistance, DEI initiatives, "woke" causes, and the Green New Deal while preserving Social Security, Medicare, and direct payments.

The freeze, which could affect billions in aid, sparked immediate backlash from Democratic leaders, who called it unconstitutional.

Trump framed the freeze as part of a swift rollback of Biden-era policies.

I'm fairly certain if this is allowed, that's curtain call. He doesn't control those pursestrings, as they were laws passed by Congress.

ie, this is illegal.

So was withholding the ATGMs for Ukraine in 2019

[–] Bassman1805@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago

And so was Jan6. And here we are.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So, if it is illegal, what's going to be done about it?
The republicans won't turn on him, the Democrats don't have the numbers to impeach, and the SCOTUS rule against him.

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There are other options than impeachment. Every time Biden had an EO it was immediately taken to the courts and put on hold until the courts could overrule it. Where are the law suits against trump's EO's?

Well, now I have my donation list for the next four years (everyone suing him). Those that accept them anyway.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 months ago

They’re coming, they’re just not instantaneous. The question is, will the courts offer any real resistance? I am unsure.

"We will make it legal."

This is very very very bad.

It's almost like the party that made attacking minorities their identity sucks at everything except attacking minorities.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 30 points 2 months ago

Hm. I feel like I should be able to order a freeze on paying taxes.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 28 points 2 months ago

This is madness. He could have tried to just selectively kill programs he didn't like, but instead he shut down everything pending a review which cannot possibly happen in a timely manner. This throws everything into chaos and even if programs are reinstated that chaos in the meantime will be devastating. This is irresponsible and harmful at any length, but to try to make a move of this magnitude in a couple pages with poorly described exemptions adds a whole extra dimension.

It needs to be stayed (and the stay accepted by the administration) almost immediately to limit the harm.

We gotta organize, and get everyone on board. I would love it if it was tomorrow, but if we went tomorrow, we would be alone

[–] AshMan85@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

This is going to affect his base disproportionately isn't it?

[–] Suburbanl3g3nd 4 points 2 months ago

Yes it will

[–] bishbosh@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

I wish there was a return period for elections.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

God I hope so

[–] OlPatchy2Eyes@slrpnk.net 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Froze PEPFAR with signs it won't be reactivated. People rely on them for HIV meds

Future "useless eaters" to be culled

Remember when conservatives said this same thing about Obamacare?

"Oh you have AIDS? you shouldn't have been gay and it's your fault." The Lord says you're an abomination anyway... Die and make room in our country for real American patriots.

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 months ago

Except, of course, to Israel.
