Dunham admitted to being in awe of Elon Musk’s puppet work with President Trump.

Nice finish.

jeff dunham

oh yeah that was a guy who exists

[–] Cold_Brew_Enema@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

And was never funny

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That is not even almost Jeff Dunham's most racist puppet.

Is Achmed worse than Sweet Daddy Dee?

[–] TaiCrunch@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Even when I liked Jeff Dunham (I was in high school), Sweet Daddy Dee seemed like the product of him watching one 70s Blaxploitation film.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

I too have seen plenty of his work, and even now I have to say, the man's oeuvre underlines the unfortunate reality that anything can be made funny. Even if it's. Y'know. Racism. Sweet Daddy Dee in particular stands out for one exchange where Dunham himself is the butt of the joke, for missing slang so dated that his audience is expected to get it. Dee: "You're not just white, you're neon white."

The most damning thing we can say about him is that he's only a comic. All his skill is delivery. Dude fully embraced bigoted stereotypes for his stand-up routine, and then basically nailed the execution on building, handling, and conversing with some deeply regrettable puppets. But his material is shit. Listen - there's writers who could make these stereotypes hysterical. If Carlin was an asshole then the seven words might've been eight or nine and he'd still have people rolling in the aisles. Stonetoss, an actual fucking Illinois Nazi, knows how to make a webcomic, better than an aggravating number of non-fascists. Our boy Jeff Dunham goes onstage with an A+ performance for some C- material... about half of which would end anyone else's career.

I think that's the joke. To right wingers, a hick is what they might call racist, not recognizing real racism as valid.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Jeff Dunham is one of the most disappointing stand ups. He clearly can craft a set and a joke really well but he chooses to go for hack racist premises instead of doing real work.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

His act never really changes. I saw him in the ‘90s with Achmed and the Jalapeño. Saw him in the ‘00s and it was pretty much the same act. Saw a video of him recently and it was the exact same schtick. Racist, stereotypes, and “get off my lawn”. Some might try to whitewash it as satire, but sure AF his audience isn’t there for satire.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Comedians doing wholly new sets every time is a thing fir the generation that follows Dunham so that's not a shocker.

I just wish he used his talent to make different jokes.

My favorite joke I've seen Jeff Dunham deliver on stage is from some random old stand-up gig he did. His abstract purple puppet "Peanut" always wears one shoe. He says "Peanut, it looks like you lost a shoe." Peanut says "Nah man, I found one."

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world -4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That is all true but this is satire.

[–] WagyuSneakers@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's satire lampshading real racism.

When people use "satire" as a shield to tell hateful jokes or mock vulnerable populations, this is often referred to as "punching down." It's also sometimes called "pseudo-satire" or "false satire" because it lacks the critical intelligence and moral purpose that defines true satirical work.

It's not comedy. It's a clap trap for racists.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is comedy. It's just racist comedy and American culture largely abandoned that in the 2000s.

[–] WagyuSneakers@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

What's it matters if it's comedy?

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Your last sentence was saying it wasn't comedy. Im saying it is bad and hacky but comedic nonetheless.

[–] WagyuSneakers@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a saying. If you can't understand that I'd reccomend not commenting.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 0 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

No that's not a saying and you are in no place to dictate who should comment and when.

[–] WagyuSneakers@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago

It is. It's readily available on the internet so it's a very dumb lie to go with.

And I can have opinions on who should comment.

Crawl back out of your ass.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The article is satire not Jeff Dunham. Hopefully they made onion rings before you ate the onion.

[–] WagyuSneakers@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

And then someone made a comment and we went into a discussion. That's where you showed up with your comment.

So let's run both your social skills together and determine what your best course of action here is

A. Join in the conversation B. Leave the nice people alone C. Drop all context or etiquette and try and be a contrarian online for some sweet, sweet Lemmy updoots

You're the type of person that ruins the internet. Log out.

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

To be clear you mean The Onion article is satire. You aren't making a quip off of their comment.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I mean hard times dot net is a satire site like the onion.

[–] TheLowestStone@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago

Picking his most racist puppet sounds like trying to find the biggest bigot at a nazi rally.

[–] oakey66@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I legit thought this was real when I saw this post. Then I saw the feed.

[–] Syd@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago

Well shoot I bit the onion too. This legitimately would be one of the least outrageous things the administration has done, I didn't even question it.

I used to tell my friends long ago that this guy used puppets as a way to be as racist as possible without being called out. Somehow the puppets are a buffer in people’s brains. They would say i was over reacting but I’ve always just stuck with that cause it’s pretty obvious what he’s doing

He's a jalapeno. On a stick.

(I'm too lazy to go find the n with the squiggly above it)

(I’m too lazy to go find the n with the squiggly above it)

I'm not sure about android devices, but if you're using an iphone you can long-press 'N' and it'll pull up non-english character options. Same applies for every letter.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fwiw this is how it works on my android

[–] ZeroCool@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Thanks for confirming. I was pretty sure it was the same, but I had to switch to an iPhone for work several years ago so I wasn't sure that was still the case.

[–] ZeroCool@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Aaaah, yeah, it's a pain in the butt to try memorizing keyboard shortcuts for characters you're probably not using very often. Sorry my reply wasn't relevant!

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It might be alt+0241. I don't have it memorized but I find it by accident when misremembering 241

[–] seahorse@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

No problem! Appreciate the tip

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

The thing is, Jeff never pronounced it as jalapeño though, I remember him specifically saying "jalapeno".

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Man that guy is like posts from /c/TheRightCantMeme personified. What a douche.

[–] RedWeasel@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Walter is a classic old timey racist that remembers when certain types weren't allowed some places.

Bubba J is a typical racist that believes stereotypes are intrinsic attributes and doesn't want to have anyone to worry about moving into his trailer park and steal his redneck treasures, like his fox body mustang shell or bikes he found.

Achmed is a religious zealot that wants anyone who isn't a follower of Islam to die.

The rest are caricatures, some racist because Jeff is white, and one is a middle finger to his "bitch of an ex-wife."

I wonder if Jeff will put Larry, an advisor to Trump, up for the event because that would be gold.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Ohhh, as in the character is racist.
