Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Have you tried a freshwater diet?

[–] oce@jlai.lu 82 points 2 days ago (3 children)

What kind of people have teeth that look exactly like this? That's nuts.

The front row ones look more similar to our teeth than an apes, so that is pretty crazy to me.

If I went into an aquarium to find these fuckers cheesing at me I'd have to take mushrooms to cope. Thank fuck we have AI and this shits on a screen, I can sleep another day

They evolved to chew nuts that fell into the water

Ok well, I'm never swimming again.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If you wade or jump in, you'll be fine.

[–] moody 7 points 1 day ago

If your junk is dry, the fish can't get to it

[–] Bonus@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If you fall in, not so much.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago

The most dangerous place to be is right on the shore. Either jump in or stay away. You have to commit around these nut-chompers.

[–] cowfodder@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You people have never watched River Monsters with Jeremy Wade and it shows.

Is this an example of convergent evolution?

[–] lars@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey it is! Kinda. I Think.

But why are human teeth shaped like this in the front? Not so much for nuts, right?

[–] SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I thought the same thing so I looked into it! The pacu fish's front teeth aren't flat like ours. They're more like our molars, which serve the same purpose of being used for crushing (so it technically still is convergent evolution)

Anytime! An opportunity to learn should always be used :)

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That article you linked literally starts with

We apologize in advance for the nightmarish qualities inherent to the pacu fish

No. Nope. No way. Uh uh. I'm not scrolling down. NEVER. You hear me? I have enough nightmares as it is...

[–] SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Honestly I don't blame you given the pictures of them with their teeth out

[–] midsommar_blomma@lemm.ee 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

There's another marine fish that also has these kind of teeth -- look up Sheepshead fish!

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 1 points 22 hours ago

I hadn't had many regrets in life, originally.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

When the Japanese finally get their teeth generation DNA therapy going, everyone will be after these fish for starter scaffolds.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can I harvest teeth from this fish to replace the one I'm missing?

Are you suggesting people are evolutionarily suited to hobbling nuts?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I can eat walnut whole. The shell is fibrous, good for digestion.

[–] taxiiiii@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Found. The pacu fish

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago
