  1. Keep it civil.
  2. No memeposts/shitposts. Memes are great but direct them to grimdank.
  3. Please mark any posts containing realistic nudity or realistic excessive gore/violence as NSFW; this rule mainly applies to cosplay and realistic drawings rather than miniatures. Being that 40k is inherently violent, this is a judgement call, and mods may occasionally request posters add tags.
  4. No contemporary politics, no political debates. This is a space to enjoy the hobby and get away from the doomscrolling.

Hi everybody :)

I'm not entirely new to wargaming, but I've never played WH40k before. So I have many questions about the game and some tooling around it. I'll start with universal questions in case answers may help some new players too and then I have a couple of questions about the faction I'd like to play. Thank you for reading it and I hope answering some questions :)

  1. After a Combat Patrol "phase" what do I need to have to play a full Warhammer 40k game? Dices and measuring tape are obvious. But do I need to buy a codex? Do I need to buy a datasheet cards?
  2. How to unlock information about datasheets and detachment rules in WH40k official app?
  3. Are there any popular army builder apps or sites? Or we should stick to the official app?
  4. When I need to specify units for Dedicated Transports? Should it be specified on an army roster list or it could be decided before the game? If it is former, how can I select it in the official app army builder?
  5. The same question about attaching Characters to Bodyguard units?

Specific questions about Space Wolves:

  1. New Codex has new Combat Patrol, but I can find this new Combat Patrol as a box to buy neither on the official warhammer.com site, nor on Amazon nor at my local stores. Do I need to buy units separately to play it as a Combat Patrol or it'll come out some time later (when?) or it was already sold out and I missed it completely?
  2. Previous Combat Patrol has Battle Leader Thoryk in it. Can I pick him outside of Combat Patrol? If I can, than who is he: Lieutenant, Wolf Guard Battle Leader or someone else? I can find him neither in Legendary Proxies Table nor in Legends Field Manual.

1 - Datacards are great in theory. In practice they're instantly outdated and overpriced. The codices get outdated as they're patched too. Generally I use one of the online rule sources provided by third parties unless I'm planning to play at Warhammer World or something.

3 - Every iteration of the official app I've used has been trash.

One Page Rules plus a 3D printer or paper cut-outs and friends who are up for such will save you so much headache/$$$$ over doing things the Games Workshop way.

Otoh, don't mind me. I own a couple official armies, but haven't played in around 20 years. I prefer the lore and avoid certain un-washed masses like the plague.

  1. How to unlock information about datasheets and detachment rules in WH40k official app?

There used to be a code in the paper codex that unlocked it.

~~It is likely sold out for the time being. It is relatively new and supposedly popular. I do have one sitting on my shop's shelf (as well as two of the army boxes) collecting dust.~~

Update: Just got off the phone with my GW rep, the new Space Wolves combat patrol has not released yet.

Oh, thank you very much. I'm glad that I haven't missed the new Space Wolves Combat Patrol :)

And on the code, cool, I wasn't sure will it be in the codex or in the datasheet cards. I guess than I don't need to buy at least cards :)

I stopped buying data sheet cards because more often than not they are outdated week 1. But I also gave not played 40k since 8th.

Hi,

  1. newrecruit is a very good app or website to build armylists on. It lacks the strategems though, so may by stick with the official app.

4 & 5. It is decided when setting up the units so no need to mark in the roster.

  1. No, all data sheets in a release like a combat patrol can only be used within a single release. So can't combine Combat Patrol and the codex versions.

@keldzh I’d suggest first getting the Warhammer 40K Introductory Set to see if you actually enjoy the building and painting parts of the hobby. If you decide to go on, decide on whether you are interested in small (approximately 10 infantry models per side) or large (dozens of models, including tanks and monsters etc). If small-scale, get the Kill Team starter set. If large-scale, watch some faction introductions (e.g. Bricky), pick one, and get the combat patrol box for that faction.

Thanks :) Based on my previous experience with Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warmachine I'm more into large-scale, so Combat Patrol box it is :)
