Duck face came to mind yesterday - randomly realized I hadn't seen duckface in the wild for a long time.

Or, alternatively, what are some old fads you wish would make a comeback?

The spirit of the question is social fads. Please try to keep replies to lighthearted things. I'll delete the post if the comments turn into political commentary.

Last week, I had to explain what pogs were to a pair of teammates, had to stop myself from starting with "back in my day, when things were good and people didn't spend so much time on their phones..."

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, because many people didn't have cell phones back then. For me it was when I was maybe third grade; two or three kids out of the whole class had phones.

[–] MyBrainHurts@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh wow, do you mind if I ask when pogs hit for you? I would've been in early grade school, so, maybe 94/95.

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Seems like I'm a bit younger than you, it must've been early 2000s for me.

Pogs are the civilized upgrade of throwing rocks together. Fuck yeah it should come back. It is ingrained in our DNA

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 2 weeks ago

They already did. That one's cyclical.

Saw (or rather heard) a few at a football game recently. They're still here, but at least it isn't a stadium full.

Instead we use cowbells like God and nature intended ;)

I got a fever

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the reminder lol

Vaguebooking. At least it died out for me, when my age group grew up past high school. Specifically, the vaguebooking that would involve lame-ass "motivation quotes" or worse song lyrics that were obviously about some dramatic thing happening in their life, usually pointed at someone.

I still have one person who never moved on from high-school who still does crap like this, but now I just still follow them for the pure nostalgia and the joy of seeing these. Seriously, they show how immature they are, unable to actually go talk about their emotions a veil so thin of "please I want my privacy" while posting about it online.

You've just described like 90% of the AIM away messages in high school lol.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh god now there is a concept I long forgot about!

[–] IcedRaktajino@startrek.website 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I didn't notice it at the time, but AIM away messages were basically like proto-Twitter long before actual Twitter became a thing. Some people would always be "away" so their inspirational crap would show since AIM still let you chat like normal while "away".

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Aaahaha. Back when Facebook was still a thing I would vaguebook with Protomen lyrics. God knows what I was thinking

[–] Silic0n_Alph4@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

If you destroy the working class all you get is a broken machine?

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Omfg yes. I remember when Facebook had that promt next to the posting input, prefixing all statements.

"Person".. is feeling like somebody hurt me badly.

Oh my, yes. That one needed to die before it started. Obviously fishing for responses, refusing to elaborate, sometimes getting defensive in the comments, sometimes moving conversations to private chat.

And the tired old "someone knows who they are!"

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Followed with one of their friends saying "Yeah Tim's an asshole" and them replying either "Yes he's such an asshole" or equally likely "Please respect our privacy". Either way, super annoying.

[–] Usernameblankface@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Just publicly saying they're in the know, and closer to the poster than anyone who doesn't know. "Look at me! I'm such a close friend that I know who they're talking about!"

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You don't really hear about serial killers anymore.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Of course not - they're in politics now after all.

I'm glad pop music stopped sounding like EDM

[–] squinky@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

Next I’d be pretty happy if EDM could stop sounding like pop music too

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Not sure that this alternative is better.

Compression up the ass and nasal whiny vocals can't become uncool soon enough.

NFTs. They have not been and will not be missed.

NFTs. They have not been and will not be missed

crypto in general can go away anytime now also

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 12 points 2 weeks ago

Most all trends or fads are not my thing. Im usually always out of fashion and its sorta funny when something I wear or do or whatever actually comes around again or whatnot.

[–] RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Skinny jeans, ultra tiny phones, basically anything that was a PITA to use or traded comfort to look fashionable.

Two things I want to see come back is JNCO style jeans that are enormous, and zipoffs. Oversized jeans - that's comfort right there. I lived through that. There's nothing like being able to put your 2" thick 10 lb math textbook in your back pocket like a wallet, lol. Zipoff pants / convertable pants were the bomb. You could be warm on a cold morning and have shorts in the afternoon. I really miss those, and the lack of cargo pockets today. Where have all the cargos gone???

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

Coincidentally I was thinking about this yesterday, along with girls puffing their cheeks in selfies.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 5 points 2 weeks ago

Duckface? Yeah that's not completely dead, unfortunately.

The fidget spinner.

Currently waiting on people to stop using "know what I mean", "end of the day", "umm", "like", "I mean", and other filler words.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think you'll be waiting a very long time. The specific words and phrases will shift, but I think filler words are just a natural consequence of thinking while speaking. Some people are better at that than ~~me~~ others but it's not going to disappear.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Obama: "Um."

Vonnegut: "Um."

Yeah, um, it works.

[–] brashboy@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree but also filler words are important. It spaces out the information, making it easier for people to digest in real time.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

A brief pause does the same thing.

[–] IcedRaktajino@startrek.website 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

But then.....you sound like....William.....Shatner.....and I'm not...sure....if that is any....better.

Fidgets have great therapeutic uses, just they tend to get tossed at teachers who aren't trained

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

'mid', 'based', and the rest of last-year's clique-signaling kid-pidgin.

[–] Octavio@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t go to business meetings anymore, so maybe it’s still going strong, but I feel like the wave has kind of crested on using “ask” as a noun. Like, “that’s a big ask,” or, “my ask of you is this.” I know that nouns get verbed and verbs get nouned all the time in popular usage and normally I’m totally fine with it. Impact as a verb never bothered me, for instance. But for some reason ask as a noun was always super annoying to me.
