Delta State Police Chief Michael Peeler said there was also no evidence of an ongoing threat to students and faculty. He told reporters Monday the death investigation was being assisted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as well as local police and sheriff's deputies.

Online rumors that the student was found with broken limbs were disputed by Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr.

Novody cares, he wasn't white.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 1 points 45 minutes ago

A second hanging was found just after in a different part of Mississippi. This victim was white. Will be interesting to see if there's interest. He was reportedly unhoused so another easy write off for the media.

https://people.com/police-initially-told-family-black-student-trey-reed-found-dead-dorm-lawyer-says-11812044

Police told his parents they found him dead in his bed, they found out from the news that he was hanged.

No foul play, my ass.

[–] runner_g@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 hours ago

Let me guess, the police chief's son is involved.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

Mississippi Goddamn.

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

Mississippi has a history of sweeping black murders under the rug.

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 7 points 18 hours ago

So the police did it. Or someone related to the police.

A black person hanging from a tree, in a southern state, is itself a sign of foul play.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

Pretty sure if anybody is found hanging from a tree without a chair or something under them is foul play. A black person hanging from a tree with nothing under them is likely a lynching and a hate crime.

The family is seeking an independent autopsy. Do we know about how long that will take? Somehow, no matter the results, I doubt i'll continue to see much about this specific incident in national news, and I'd like to remind myself to check back in on this.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

yeah, but what about charlie kirk? he was a national treasure!!11one!

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 8 hours ago

Don't worry about him. Charlie is settling into his afterlife of eternal torment.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Shouldn't take long but yes the media will be over this by then, they barely touched it.

This is going to be another one of those "we demand justice for" and within a month Trump will be badmouthing the poor guy that was hanged.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

*lynched

No disrespect meant, but that's what this was (barring independent evidence to the contrary).

[–] TallonMetroid@lemmy.world 180 points 1 day ago (3 children)

A black person hanging from a tree in Mississippi? Sure, it could be suicide, but c'mon. Let's be real here. It's on them to prove that this wasn't a lynching.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

Black people don't hang themselves. To do so is to inflict the fear of a lynching on your loved ones and community. So if you hear that a black person committed suicide by hanging, assume lynching.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Sure, it could be suicide, but c'mon

I think a person killing themselves would probably not try to frame others for it. What, he thought it would be funny?

So yeah, no way in hell am I buying that this was a suicide.

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 65 points 1 day ago

Accountability? For police? 😐

[–] ChonkyLincoln@lemmy.zip 91 points 1 day ago

Oh, ABC says that? The Nazi propaganda machine that just fired Jimmy Kimmel? Nothing to see here folks!

[–] EditsHisComments@lemmy.world 136 points 1 day ago

This was in Cleveland, in the Mississippi Delta. For those who don't know, the Mississippi Delta had some of the largest plantations in Mississippi and the racial and economic divide still very much holds up today. Plus Mississippi authorities are some of the most racist in the country, so no foul play my ass

[–] hddsx@lemmy.ca 55 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, you know, black people hang themselves all the time in Mississippi.

Don’t know what about Mississippi makes black people want to hang themselves so much more than in other states. Must be a black people issue.

[–] spirinolas@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

There was nobody around using bed sheets or burning crosses. Let's not jump into conclusions.

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Some trees in Mississippi have always grown hanging black people don't you know?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What strange fruit those trees have,

Scrolled looking. Beat me to it.

[–] wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Lol make sure you believe the county coronor!! It's a job you can get just by pretending to know things. There are literally no qualifications beyond being appointed. I bet that guy really knows his stuff.

people need to stop paying federal taxes.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

This one is on Mississippi. Withholding federal taxes won't help with this.

[–] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 2 points 21 hours ago

All of this shit is being precipitated by the shit happening in washington.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Poor kid. Whether suicide or otherwise. A tragedy.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It’s Mississippi. It was a lynching, and like every lynching in the past, they’ve said “oh it must have been a suicide, we’ve got no evidence!”

Chances are, the people investigating them are friends with, or in fact are, the people that did it,

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Absolutely.

But it wasn’t a suicide. It was murder.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Reddit bans all mention of that.
