Wow, this is great.

We all grew up with free speech. That's what the USA has always been about. Now you have an admin who threatens and bullies taxpayers.

[–] Ferrous@lemmy.ml 23 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

We all grew up with free speech.

Tell that to any Black American over the age of 65.

The USA was a political experiment started solely by white, landowning, 20-something slavers for the express intent of genociding as many Native Americans as possible. It's time for us to stop trying to "reclaim patriotism" and realize the American poltical experiment has devolved into fascism and must be dismantled.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Ok but you do see how 65 is getting up there in age, right? Like I'm sure there's a few people here above that, and OP should've accounted for that in their statement. But the vast majority of us have in fact grown up in the last 65 years where freedom of speech in the usa has been well and truly absolute.

The USA was a political experiment started solely by white, landowning, 20-something slavers for the express intent of genociding as many Native Americans as possible.

People over a hundred years dead do not define the present of a country. Hell, look at Germany. Sure they have a small nazi party but the nazis were only 80 years ago and aren't defining their present reality..

The political experiment line is just strange, seriously.

Watch the monologue before viewing it becomes a crime. He didn’t even make fun of Saint Charlie.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 18 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

He does make fun of Lord Trump though. Which, as we all know, is illegal.

Now i wonder what John Oliver gonna say this week, or he gonna get censored by HBO as well?

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 16 points 22 hours ago (9 children)

Depends on whether or not HBO is seeing continually declining numbers of viewership. CBS, NBC, ABC those are all dying networks and they'll do anything to stay on air.

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 17 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

This is what I think too!

These are the death knells of dying industry, like Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio in 2004, which was ultimately the result of the Super Bowl Halftime show when Janet Jackson exposed her nipple.

It’s literally the same crap. Something happens that people don’t like, and a failing media industry tries to stay relevant by clamping down, losing their talent in the process.

Back then it was shock jocks on terrestrial radio, now it’s late night and “cable” tv.

ABC and CBS didn’t get bought recently because they’re doing well, you know?

Sources: Howard Stern’s Wikipedia page, the “nipplegate” Wikipedia page, and having too much energy this morning.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

Thank you for this much needed perspective. While the FCC's actions reek of overreach, ABC folding like a cheap card table just didn't sit well with me. Especially considering how CBS' parent company went to court first before cancelling Colbert. It makes a lot more sense now.

Is your country great again? Was so difficult to vote for her instead to avoid this fascistic nightmare, wasn't it?

[–] glorkon@lemmy.world 41 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

That slogan "Make America great again" made us Germans very uneasy from the start, cause we remember the last guy who promised us (very literally) to make Germany great again.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 29 points 22 hours ago (9 children)

Where do you think Trump got the idea for it?

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Of course he got it from Hitler, who got the idea from America's "Manifest Destiny" philosophy. It's fascist turtles all the way down ...

Ronald Reagan's campaign.

[–] Tingle@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

I'd assume it was Ronald Reagan since it was also his slogan in the 1980's.

It's pretty clear that Trump is a fascist piece of shit but this game he is playing has been going on a lot longer than people think.

He just stole it from Reagan's campaign.

[–] ratten 6 points 20 hours ago

Democrats bear almost as much blame for nominating "lesser-evil" candidates over someone who is actually good.

Donald Trump won because Bernie lost, twice.

BOYCOTT ABC!! And send angry letters to cowardly execs who did this!!

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

people still watch network TV? That's that thing where they force to to watch something at a set time, then play ads?

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I grew up with it. It was the R word. Oh, I grew up with that too.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Point of order. ABC is owned by Disney. Make of that what you will.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Y'all! This isn't ABC - this is conservative Sinclair and Nexstar Media Group!

@Immarsano@lemmynsfw.com nailed this one by reading the article.

Nexstar Media Group forced ABC's hand on this by saying they would run non-ABC programming on all their local TV stations they own. They're in the process of getting FCC approval for a $6 billion deal that would give them ownership of 265 local TV stations in 44 states.

Meanwhile, Sinclair Media, which also owns tons of local TV stations, isn't letting Kimmel's rerun on Friday be broadcast anyway, instead showing a CK tribute show. So they were likely also going to do the same to ABC and just hadn't said anything publicly because they don't need deal approved right now.

This is the media version of Red-Stating, where state legislatures were slowly turned by the GOP which gave them the power to Gerrymander Dem-held House districts away and turn them red in 2021. How do you stop a global juggernaut liberal media company? You marginalize them by buying up all the local affiliates and stations that still make up a large part of their market. You buy up everything that sits in between the viewer and the media itself. Once the media company withers, you shove in your own programming as gaps open up.

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 10 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

of course it's also ABC. ABC could have said "lol get fucked" but they bent the knee. And keep in mind ABC is owned by Disney who owns ESPN who JUST made a deal with notorious right-wing "trump buddy, buddy" company TKO to nickle and dime people to watch WWE shows. TKO the same company that is going to put on a UFC event on the damn White House lawn. TKO the same company that decided to cancel Wrestlemania in New Orleans in favor of take MORE blood money from Saudi Arabia and having it there instead.

They all connect with each other so saying one company isn't to blame and another one is, is bullshit and you know it. ABC is as much to blame as Sinclair. At the end of the day they all bow to dear leader.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Take 1 or 2 big steps back here.

Conservatives have unlocked a massive weapon to control huge swaths of media and data transmission, including cable companies who still control a lot of internet infrastructure. Worrying about ABC is immaterial when compared to the fact that foundational telecommunications systems are under their control and they just learned they can wield that power with impunity to change what they see carried over those systems.

Or, hey, you know what, fine, you're right - Disney bad, cancel Hulu for 2 months and I'm sure it'll all work itself out.

See, I'm someone who can't stand Jimmy Kimmel. I find him both unfunny and very annoying as a person, and I never thought there would come a day where I would actually defend him vigorously, but here we are.

This is truly inexcusable. This is the most blatant violation of the first amendment possible. This is a clear cut example of the government coercing and colluding with corporations to censor a private citizen on a private show for comments that are perfectly legal. He was only censored because MAGA morons got triggered by a statement that's not even controversial. Even IF it was controversial, that's literally the whole point of free speech. It's to defend offensive, controversial, and unpopular opinions from government persecution.

See, I didn't care much when Colbert got cancelled because it seemed like it was a business decision, sure, whatever. But this? This is MAGA crossing a line that should never be crossed. We're starting to enter into actual tyranny territory from this administration. The only MAGA conservatives left are either slimy opportunists or blind loyalists, so I'm not holding my breath on them holding themselves accountable. However, I am hoping that everyone else stands up and takes a stand against this because the consequences of this are very, very serious.

July 2: Paramount and Trump settle bullshit 60 Minutes lawsuit for $16 million

July 14: Colbert criticizes the lawsuit saying it's a "big fat bribe."

July 17: CBS announces that Colbert is cancelled

Paramount is in the process of a large merger with Skydance Media, which must be approved by regulators (including those controlled/affected by the federal government)

It wasn't as blatantly corrupt, but it was still corrupt.

[–] ViceroTempus@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Forgive me, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around how many people have been sleeping and still are.

Tyranny is already here. It's been here since they started taking people to concentration camps. Like how do people not get that? The line has already been crossed and then some. Tyranny is here and will continue to reign until you and everybody else who is asleep or groggy are willing to wake up and do the hard but correct actions.

Just to be clear: they suspended him for criticizing MAGA for trying to claim that the killer wasn't one of them. He didn't say anything about Charlie Kirk. He was censored for speaking truth by his own network. Not only censored, censured and suspended indefinitely.

We're 100% there kids. The founding fathers made a point to put something right after freedom of speech, from religion, and of assembly. Right there 2nd in order. Unabridged. Welp the 1st amendment is being abridged as we speak. And I hear that second thing was put in place to protect that first thing. I've been hearing it for over 50 years.

*quick edit in case anyone else wants to try to educate me about the constitution: no, he isn't protected by the 1st amendment from getting suspended. ABC should be protected but seeing as they've already settled for $16 million over threats on their FCC license and brought in new trump-friendly leadership, we can all agree he wasn't suspended due to ratings drops. Stop pretending things are normal. This is an obvious 1st amendment issue.
