Tbf TOS era male Klingons didn't look too different from humans either

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 43 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, but they worked a little harder.

"I want the male Klingons in black face"

You couldn't make Star Trek today!

They say, standing among at least three currently airing modern Star Trek shows

The dirty truth is that almost all sci-fi "aliens" look a hell of a lot like humans.

[–] Zellith@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago

Or humans look a lot like sci fi aliens.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 year ago

Clint Howard is still the scariest looking alien ever depicted on TV.

They really didn't give much direction at all on how Klingons should look back then. The actor and makeup artist basically came up with it on the spot.

Pretty much all Star Trek aliens are just human from the mouth downwards.

They insist that anything else would be uncanny valley

Female Klingons are ladies from Dublin, noted. They even share the orange fake tan.

Mimi being Klingon makes a lot of sense now.

I always assumed it was a comparison between the West and the USSR. One could swap the populations and few would notice. It was a culture and leadership thing.

In Next Gen the USSR was gone, so they no longer needed that angle.

This is all assumption though.

A lot of people think that's what it was.

That said, TNG started in ~~1997~~ 1987 and the USSR collapsed in 1991.

[–] joyjoy@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So you're saying TNG caused the collapse of the Soviet Union?

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah but by '87 the writing was definitely on the wall for the USSR

1987, bit of a typo there my guy.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I fixed it.

The Klingons are modeled after Japanese feudal society.

More eyelashes. More. Okay, I think you’re hearing, “Give me a lot of lashes.” What I mean is GIMMY ALL THE EYELASHES BABY!

[–] joyjoy@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago

Lashes you say?

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ol' gene knew the cost of rubber in the 60's

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think that means what you think it means.
