I think it's really dumb that people think 5'7" (170 cm) is short for males.

The typical height of the human male is anywhere from 5'5"–6'0" (165–183 cm).

5'7" isn't short; it is stupidly average.

Sounds like epic cope from a manlet.

I am 5'6.

Who me? Hell no, bruh, I'm a fucking 5'1" woman. Lol.

[-] meliaesc@lemmy.world 14 points 9 months ago

I'm a 5'3" woman, but it explains why we don't think 5'7" is short.

I mean, I'm pretty sure I explained why I don't think 5'7" is short pretty well. It's a statistically unsupported claim.

It depends wildly, but 170cm might be short in the US, especially for some age groups since 175cm seems to be the average for everyone over 20.

From 2015–2018, the average height for males in the United States ages 20 and over was 69 inches (175cm)

For Finland, for males 18+ that average is 177cm. You can be your ass I'm short at 169cm. And you do not want to go "well, in the Philippines I would be above average" lol

It's not such a tall order if you're quick-witted.

[-] Jimbo@yiffit.net 32 points 9 months ago

Hay tall guys, my partner (5'4) and I (5'6) can comfortably fit in a Mazda Miata, can you?

[-] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

I (6'5") actually sold my NA a couple of months ago. I could just fit in it and my knees were at 4:00 and 8:00 next to the wheel (not touching it at least). The only reason I sold it is because it wasn't my daily driver and money has gotten very tight. So glad I learned to drive manual with it and then enjoy it for a few more years.

I miss it dearly :(

Oh also it was definitely a death trap for someone of my height. That roll bar would not have saved me.

Nah but I can’t get my legs to fit properly on any bus nor plane and I’m not even really tall (around 6ft I guess)

Remember that Wolverine is only 5’3” and he is widely considered the best at what he does (which is not very nice). In addition to this, he is the greatest showman.

[-] c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world 10 points 9 months ago

I really wish they'd hired someone shorter for the role, I understand they want their actors to all be similar in height for close up shots and we've culturally adopted the idea that the good guys are always 6' tall and only villains are short, but it would have been nice to see Wolverine accurately represented.

It's been very strange. When I was a child in school I was not well liked, I was fat neckbeard with no internet because late 80s. Truly I was a sad pile. They called me all manner of hateful things, but it never even occurred to them to call me short, at 5'7".

I rarely feel "short", only average. Most men seem to be around my height. Some minority of men are taller. I still manage to tower over many women, because women be small, yo. A "tall" girl is roughly my height, so they're either at eye level or shorter, with the occasional very tall woman in the mix.

I'm tall enough that other people ask for assistance with things on high shelves on a regular enough basis, mostly women.

There is a DRASTIC difference between how the world treats my height versus how the internet shitbag community does. Go figure, abusive people are abusive.

I can only pinpoint the 2000s, and online dating profiles where you can sort by height, plus many women having a height fetish in the exact same way that men will ask people their bra size, and the continuing popularity of the NBA, plus women wanting to have sex with the players, plus their truly freakish heights throwing off the populist curve so that anybody under 6'0 is teeny tiny. Somebody is gonna start squeaking about "6 foot is average" so sure, chief, you win. But there was a time when I just wasn't particularly tall. Suddenly I am perceived as an actual midget.

It's just another example of the way people constantly try to find excuses to treat you like shit over just about anything they can think of, it shows how they're constantly inventing that. It's one of God's little reminders to not worry what happens to them.

I'm sorry.

[-] lobut@lemmy.ca 21 points 9 months ago

Pfft, 5"7 losers.

Luckily I'm 5"6.

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 21 points 9 months ago

That's rude, we prefer height challenged.

[-] anarchrist@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 9 months ago

I don't feel particularly challenged. The world is built for people in the 5'5"-6' range.

I dont even care about this meme, what coat is Robert Pattinson wearing?

[-] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I was thinking it's just some old WW1/WW2 stuff from some movie he was in but nope lol

For his front-row appearance, Pattinson wore a double-faced coat designed by Dior men’s creative director Kim Jones. There were several standout draped outerwear pieces and blazers on the runway, and Pattinson’s coat mimicked that idea with its double-breasted style and attached thick wool scarf. (Call it a half coat, half blanket.) Underneath, the actor wore a chocolate leather jacket for extra warmth, and finished it off with light brown khakis and hefty patent boots. If any man can pull off this kind of tricky layering, it’s Pattinson.

I was thinking it was some military surplus stuff but nope, peak of fashion Dior stuff. Lmao

Everybody sitting here being offended on 5'7" dudes' behalf: thanks, but we're laughing our asses off at it! I love being a short king

[-] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 6 points 9 months ago

Some people are really, really focused on their height and see it as a big source of issues in their lives. I don't know if it's a bigger thing in the US (where most of those complaining seem to be from) or maybe I've just been lucky, but I don't remember getting too much shit for it.

(hits up Wolfram|Alpha for a conversion) I mean, 1,70 m is not that small. It's fairly average, even in The Netherlands. Speaking from experience.

[-] UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev 7 points 9 months ago

That's 13cm shorter than the average in the Netherlands. Never been in the Netherlands, but even in Norway where the average is 181cm, 170cm is definitely on the short end. In the US the average is only 177 so it's not really short over the pond though.

I was initially thinking of adding "but who really cares about height in real life though?", but then I remembered that height discrimination goes beyond women in the dating scene and is a serious issue.

Tussle their hair, smile and say "sure thing big guy. Want some chocolate milk?" And put your hands on your hips. It will make their day.
