President Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged that his tariffs could result in fewer and costlier products in the United States, saying American kids might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,” but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

Why isn’t it “rich people will have 1 yacht rather than 4”?

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You know why. The same reason Martha Stewart gets jail for insider trading but the ultra rich and politicians do it in the open with no consequences

[–] Darleys_Brew@lemmy.ml 1 points 15 hours ago

Yeah, I was making a point.

[–] ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Because you keep your yachts in the Caribbean so they aren’t subject to tariffs anyway

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 6 points 21 hours ago

If he understood anything about his electorate, he would know that it would be a choice of 1 meal a day instead of 3, if the rent is still paid.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Goddamn fucking piece of shit fucking moron

[–] Nagrom@lemmy.ca 5 points 23 hours ago

Let them eat cake!

[–] Bojack411@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

"The american people will suffer but china will suffer more." So hes hurting us to hurt them? Great job dumbass.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

Even if this were true (which is dubious) this doesn't make me feel any better. That would simply make this a Pyrrhic victory.

What is the point of any of this? Oh yeah, cruelty is the point.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Nah, raising a shitload of money fast for tax breaks to pay off the billionaires who handed him the presidency is the point. Cruelty is why idiots would vote for this

[–] GreenSkree@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

The point? I think he expected the world leaders to come bearing personal gifts and favors. Trade some of the US's global position and power for his own personal wealth and power? I don't have proof, but it would be on-brand for Trump.

He's also surrounded himself with yes-men and crazy people (e.g. Navarro). He clearly has an elementary understanding (at best) of economics. Money good. China bad. Money go to China bad (trade imbalance). Tariffs keep money here.

Combine all that with the fact that he never admits responsibility for anything. When China pushed back, he retaliated. When they stopped participating, it leaves us in a stalemate that I believe will hurt us a lot more than them.

So, I think the trade imbalance is the justification. The goal is likely just personal power for Trump. But he doesn't really know what he's doing, doesn't care to learn, just thinking he's the greatest being in existence and everything bad is not his fault.

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Except the kids aren't getting 2 dolls. They're getting dragged out into the middle of the street half naked in the middle of the night because the brownshirts can't even read an address correctly when they're casually disappearing whole families.

Why the fuck is this even reported on. Fuck this whole system, down to the author that thought 'ya that's worth making an article'

Don't buy your kids dolls. Buy them fpv drones.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago

Sadly, this probably concerns the average voter more than all the Nazi shit...

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

What about the kids who were lucky to get 2 dolls prior to the trade war? Shit outta luck I guess.

[–] timmy_dean_sausage@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

Just tell them kids in China have negative dolls. That will make them feel better!

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trump has a plan for them too. The coal mines.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 1 points 21 hours ago

Florida is already making it normal for children to be the future workforce.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

They get to BECOME the doll of some rich kid. You woke people really hate freedom.

Reminds me of middle-age tales where when a princeling disobeyed his whipping-boy would get beat.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

2 dolls instead of 30 works out to a reduction of 93.3%! That's HUGE. If that's supposed to be his positive spin on things, Americans are truly fucked.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It really shows that he doesn't care about Americans, he cares about punishing and attacking people that he doesn't like. That is all that matters to him, and he doesn't hide that. He doesn't want to make things better, he wants to make people suffer.

The fact that he has supporters is absolutely unfathomable to me. Then again, those same supporters want to punish the same people he does, so it starts to make sense.

[–] Catma@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

He wants to punish Americans more than probably anyone else. Americans had the nerve to laugh at him when people joked about his hair, or makeup, or physique. Americans did not elect him in 2020. Americans allowed him to be forced out and didnt fight back hard enough when Biden "stole" the election. Americans allowed him to have some minor inconveniences when they put him on trial, raided his house for classified docs or made him take reaponsibility for his actions. Americans are going to pay because he knows nothing other than vengence for percieved slights and Americans allowed them all to happen

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

China is happily selling to the rest of the world, and yes their sales will go down without the US market, but they won't in sense of the word "suffer".

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

A real "let them eat cake" moment.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's the real statement. Instead of 30 dolls it will be 2, but that translates to food supplies, too. Instead of 30 dinners in a month, we'll only have 2.

In the year after Maduro took over Venezuela, the average citizen lost 40 pounds.

Cause American girls were getting 30 dolls every Christmas.

This guy is such a psychopath that he doesn't even understand how Christmas gifts work.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Big "How much could a banana cost? $10?" moment

Can't wait to see what happens when China stops buying our debt.

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 151 points 2 days ago (3 children)

People are going to die in the streets due to the impact of these policies.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Not sure man, my vehicle threw a rod and I am struggling to find financing to get a used vehicle until I make the money to figure out a long term solution. Partner checked FB marketplace because I don't have an account, I checked Craigslist, and the dealers near me can't seem to make a loan work with $1000 down on vehicles listed at $15k. Found one car selling for under 10k, but it has 95k miles and everything online seems to say it has a 135k mile average lifespan. So when you don't know how the people before you drove it, and it's got a 3rd party exhaust on it, I have to assume my extremely (55-60 mile) drive to work will leave me stranded on the side of the road by the end of the year still owing money on it unless I scrape the barrel everywhere in my budget and somehow sell it for nickles in 6 months trying to trade it in for something half way better. Maybe I can get arrested when I become homeless and die in jail instead of on the street.

[–] CmdrShepard42@lemm.ee 44 points 2 days ago (15 children)

Go to credit unions around you and apply for a loan yourself. You shouldn't ever rely on dealerships to find financing for you. Interest rates are awful right now but with your commute you need something reliable and fuel efficient (like a Camry or Corolla).

Yeah, I'm sure China's trembling at the mere idea.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 100 points 2 days ago (19 children)

Even if this were true, a policy that hurts everyone isn't sucessful just because someone else suffers more than you.

[–] Archer@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago

It is for Republicans

[–] gndagreborn@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

It wouldn't even be a pyrrhic victory. It would just be mutual suffering.

China's economy is still projected to grow while US heads to recession , this guy tries to create his own reality everywhere he goes.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

China has the whole world they still can sell to. The US has shut the door on all existing and potential partners

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Donny "2 dolls" trump.

[–] Carjacklavinder@reddthat.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Except a doll is $10 for the crappiest model, meaning were already only getting two dolls in the average budget. With that logic, we'll have to save up for the doll parts and assemble a single doll ourselves.

[–] lemonbun@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Cutting off your nose to spite China

[–] doctortofu@reddthat.com 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Because that's what it's all about - someone else suffering more. The objective is to increase the amount of suffering in the world, since we clearly don't have enough of it just yet, but making sure others suffer more than us. Because trying to make it so that everyone suffers less is communist, unamerican and bad, I guess...

I don't think most kids get 30, but is he already talking about how Christmas is going to be? Tomorrow is May 1st. That is 7 months away.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Everyone knows the goal of running a country is to make people suffer. Not to accomplish anything positive. That would be GlObAlIsM
