Sixt sent me a message encouraging me to check in early for my car rental. But to do so, I have to consent to a biometric face scan that their third-party contractor keeps on file. No thanks.

So many sites are asking for so much recently. Need some serious global regulations

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bought off bastards will never do it until we kill the billionaires that pay them.

My body is ready!

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I'll consent to an anal scan.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 23 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I wonder how many people will do it.

Exactly. Blows my fucking mind.

Tried to explain to my family how to opt out of Meta AI in WhatsApp and why it was a good idea.

Wasted my time.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 month ago

It is so exhausting. I feel like an alien in this world. Like I am the only person I know that is aware or who gives a damn. It just blows my mind that people do not care

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

How do you do that? I haven't used it much since that came in, and you couldn't opt out at the time.

You can mute it but can't get rid of it, as far as I know.

[–] Cris16228@lemmy.today 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I love how doing that, people can't save media automatically (which I am fine with), export chat AND disable meta AI

How about a fucking toggle "GO FUCK YOURSELF AI"????

I don't care about crappy meta AI, I don't want that available but still be able to export my chat if needed (never did) and let others save automatically my media from our chat. TF is this bullshit? LOL

[–] Rumbelows@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

You have to do it thread by thread. Tap on the chat group and look for “advanced privacy options”

Leopard: "I am going to eat you"

Everyone: agree all

Just replace the leopard with capitalism. Everyone's a cuck.

Several years ago Universal Studios wanted my thumbprint to go through a gate. I politely refused, people I was with were annoyed, employee acted like me not giving my thumbprint was a hassle.

[–] Soku@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Did they let you in without the thumb print or were you left out then?

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Yeah there was another procedure but of course it took a minute.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I went to Universal last year and I don't remember having to give any fingerprint.

I do remember having to do that for Disney ages ago though. Like, well over a decade ago. I didn't think much of it at the time.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

They do a face scan. Their tiny print terms say they only keep it temporarily, but I don't believe that at all.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

That I do remember.

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think you overestimate the efficacy of the vast majority of IT systems. My wife worked on a thumb print scanner and they never store more than a day's worth of data before getting overwritten because why would you.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I’m not over estimating anything. They take the pic with a cellphone and it gets uploaded.

[–] sykaster@feddit.nl 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but most companies have such bad data management that it probably gets lost or overwritten very soon.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think this is somewhat of a willfully ignorant thought in the age of data mining. This is Disney we're talking about. I would presume their data management to be superior than most. And in the realm of using and/or selling data that would likely include facial recognition, I'd think they'd capitalize on that given the data is already in their pocket and given freely 50k times a day to enter their park. How am I to check that they deleted the photo they took of me? I cannot.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It was the train ride to Hogwarts IIRC.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

The one between parks? I rode that both ways and didn't give up my print. Only thing I remember doing is them scanning my pass.

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

How are you supposed to pronounce this service? Because I keep trying and it keeps sounding like sext.

Or could be Seth Efricn....

[–] EtherWhack@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think sorta like if 'six' had a past tense (i.e. sixed)

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Huh. I viewed it as 60, the number. Six - T. Sorta like a speed limit.

[–] Schmuppes@lemmy.today 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, it's a German family's last name.

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I've never rented a car so I'm curious, what benefits does checking-in early actually get you? I assume you still need to talk to a person and go through the whole upselling thing they're notorious for. Accidental damage cover? Fuel cover? Rain cover? Excess cover? Excess cover excess cover?

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 month ago

Some rental places will let you bypass the counter and go straight to your vehicle. I would check in early everytime if bypassing was an option. I once waited over 2 hours at a counter due to the line. I had booked prior, but couldn't bypass the line regardless.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

I’ve never rented a car so I’m curious, what benefits does checking-in early actually get you?

Nothing. Just like checking in early to a flight.

In fact, I can only see downsides and risks... for example, if something happens on your way to the rental company or airport, which makes it impossible to actually get the vehicle or take your flight.

"But you checked in, sorry!". 😒

I think it's a mix of convenience for business travelers and a way to sate one's anxiety for control freaks.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They can't even spell their T&C's correctly smh

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

"Enrolment" is the British spelling.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I had a great experience with Turo. You just have to leave yourself some extra time to take pics of the car when you return it. No face scans.
