  • they advertise themselves as degoogled, but instead let you connect to Google/Microsoft/etc services

  • replace all the proprietary not at all Secure Services from Google, with.... Drumroll please.... Proprietary and not at all Secure Services from themselves and actively encourage it.

  • They are For-profit

  • and being MORE out of date then even Fairphones stock roms.

But a TL;DR:

/E/ is not Private. They just switch one bad comany to another one.

Wow, even if they weren't doing that, the developer response there is enough to make me avoid your product. People pointing out your lies is not "harassment".

The extreme red flags they've displayed have turned me completely off e and cut a signeficant portion of fairphone's appeal to me

The feature can be turned off. But the lack of upfront communication about it, and the developer's failure to even acknowledge people's concern about how proxying doesn't prevent OpenAI or the US Government deanonymizing your voice recordings, are quite worrying.

There are already several keyboards that can handle text to speech without sending your data to the internet. FUTO Voice Input comes with models preloaded. Transcribro does this and it's open-source.

Why settle for worse?

It uses whisper.cpp to run the OpenAI Whisper family of models and Silero VAD for voice activity detection.

… I need ð opposite, IPA TTS.

Yes, /e/ have a business model and I never liked it in the first place. They made plenty of similar choices over the years.

Personally, I would have known what I'm getting into had I chosen their OS, but many people take the company's self-praise at face value, so this post is important.

Fuckin yikes. I thought they were supposed to be decent for privacy. I really appreciate this info.

Ah, so the paranoid folks at Graphene OS WERE RIGHT!

You can never be "too paranoid" if they ARE, in fact, out to get you.

[–] Skorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

It's not a matter of being paranoid and the GrapheneOS project members are not paranoid. It is simply a matter of Murena/eOS/Gael Duval making claims about their products that are misleading, false, and harmful to users.
