Limewire acquires fyre festival

Was there anything to acquire? There never was anything but a name

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

Same goes for Limewire.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't need to read the article. They runied sharedrop.io and I'll never forgive them for that

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What was sharedrop used for before being acquired? Never heard about it before

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

p2p file transfer without accounts. You just sent a link or scanned a qr code and nos you were connected. Always used it for vms. I've been using pairdrop.net as a replacement

[–] Sunrosa@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I recommend sendme. It's a p2p file transfer system run on top of the hole-punching iroh. No port forwarding required from either side. And iroh is e2e encrypted.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Not the same:

  • sendme requires an install. Sharecrop was browser based. Which also increases security
  • the transfer requires a id I'd have to copy to the VM by hand each time I want to transfer. Sharedrop was a single code for the whole session

"You might remember us as the software that gave your computer a virus, now we can give your body a virus."

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Alternative headline: Digital virus distributor shifts to human virus distribution

[–] Cheems@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure that it's an AI platform with a sprinkle of crypto now.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 159 points 2 days ago (4 children)

People are starving on this planet (purposefully!) and somehow a piracy platform from 25 year ago, known for being shit, which pivoted to the scammy world of NFTs, somehow still exists and has enough money to buy the scam festival?

Guys, enough. How did I die, and what am I accused of that holds me to this circle of hell?

[–] drolex@sopuli.xyz 78 points 2 days ago

Ah you finally got it, congrats! We knew it would become too ridiculous to believe at some point, but I'm glad we got this far. You still bought some insane shit (Kanye running for President, Kissinger getting the Nobel peace prize, Israel committing a holocaust, Oasis getting together again, people buying monkey JPEGs for millions of dollars...). Come on, nothing in this list is even remotely believable.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Jason figured it out? Jason? This is a real low point. Yeah, this one hurts.

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 15 points 2 days ago

Does seem suspiciously like some form of Hell or Demiurge flawed reality.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At least anyone who profited from NFTs did so by taking money from selfish idiots.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Fyre Festival took money from wannabe “influencers”, sooo… same thing I guess

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Fictional quote:

look, we've been experts at distributing viruses to people wanting to listen to music for decades

We just figured, why not try it IRL?

After seeing what happened with covid, we think there's a lot of promise in the distribution of viruses at physical music festivals too.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

wait Limewire does NFTs now?

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's just a grifter that acquired the limewire logo rights and made a shitcoin out of it

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

only one? are they a loser or something? i coulda made like, two shitcoins out of it this morning. LCoin and LCoinPro. i didn't even have to think about it. and if you buy LCoin and you're smart, you can figure out a way to get LCoinPro (hint it's giving me more money) its like they aren't putting any thought into their scams.

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[Releases frostwire.png non-NFT for everybody to use]

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Wait, Limewire still exists? I haven't heard that name in at least 15-20 years...

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 68 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The...

The piracy software?

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 49 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

iirc the original ~~copywrite~~ trademark (thanks ripcord) either expired or got purchased, but it's just being used as an NFT platform or something now

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Trademark, not copyright.

[–] Uli@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 days ago

They should check what trademarks Apple has allowed to elapse, I could see myself attending a festival called FyreWire.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

We like to think of it as a community platform.

[–] Armpitbagette@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago

I mean who wouldn't want them back? I for one think about Limwire all time... just thinking - wouldn't it be great if Limewire would just launch some new stuff, maybe sell some colourful shoes, open a lime themed restaurant or maybe even become a hedge fund. Yeah, that would be just great.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 49 points 2 days ago (2 children)

TIL Limewire still exists.

So much malware.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

"end-to-end encrypted, AI-powered file sharing platform"

Wut?

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It has nothing to do with the original AFAIK, it’s some crypto project now.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

oh, how the mighty have fallen.

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 29 points 2 days ago

They actually acquired Fyre.Festival.exe. Explorer just doesn’t show the extension by default.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So you get to listen to the music for free, but you’re definitely coming home with a virus.

not me i brought my antivirus

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If they buy the name and bring in actually competent people to run it the infamy of the name would bring a lot of attention.

[–] oleorun@lemmy.fan 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They could get sponsors too - that would really whip the llama's ass. Bonsai Buddy trading cards. Gator Wallet crypto tent. Dog Park sponsored by Dogpile and Pets.com. Jeeves posted at strategic locations for guest assistance. (A)lta(V)ista AV jam sessions.

Fuck I miss the mid 90s

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

With Zombo Festival, anything is possible.

[–] hogmomma@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Welcome... to Zombocom.

[–] Edgarallenpwn@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't mind going to a Zombocom and watching a large projector with a spinning logo at this point

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 19 points 2 days ago

I wish them all the success they deserve.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

Instead of most people going home with a virus, now everybody is going home with a virus and their names on an FBI watchlist.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I'm not sure what limewire is, and I have no idea what that festival is... so, good job everyone (just in case)!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Limewire used to be a p2p file sharing platform ages ago, now the name is used for some crypto project. Probably a scam.

Fyre festival was the disaster music festival on an island where the artists didn’t show up, the villas were actually FEMA tents and food was shite. The guy who organised it went to jail. Proper scam.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Well, at least it can't get any worse.

(to the faint echo of "hold my beer" coming from Limewire's direction, probably)

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

There was also a notable lack of drinkable water, portable restrooms and anything that could let people perform basic hygiene

[–] rigatti@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

There was a really entertaining documentary on Netflix about the original festival. Highly recommend watching it, there are some real gems in some of the interviews.

[–] anarchyrabbit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago
